Bad Syncro

Well I took my jeep in yesterday to see if they could solve my clutch problem about not being able to get into first.....they said I have a bad syncro, has anyone replaced one of these? if so how difficult was it...the shop I took it to doesn't do transmission stuff, so I would have to take it somewhere else to get the work done....

You can try some of the synthetic transmission oils out there. They have been posted on here numerous times. Redline MT90 or Pennzoil Synchromesh. Alot of folks say it made a big difference.

It may be too late but it is worth a shot.

OK well after talking to some of my friends that have worked on other cars, they recomended looking into just replacing the whole transmision, depending on how much that costs, but I think that would be alot easier than replacing my syncros....so now, I have a 95 2.5L 5spd, what transmisions can I put in there besides what I have right now

You have to stick with the same transmission, and they are relatively expensive to rebuild or to replace. Run it till it dies, but try the MT90 or synchromesh, it may surprise you how much it prolongs it.

As to replacing the synchronizers you might as well have the whole thing rebuilt, but replacing it might be cheaper if you can find one reasonably priced.

check out ebay, thers a couple ax-5s on there. the only problem is they suck ass. if your gonna replace it and pay for a rebuilt one spend a little extra, get a something thats gonna last, and call up advance adapters before you do it to see what they can outfit you with to fit it up to what youve got. the ax-5 is nothin but trouble and not worth the money your gonna be puttin into it later on down the line. trust me i kno

90 jeep cherokee starting problems

im not an expert but i recently went thru the same thing. mine started grinding in first, then second and then 5th went away all together(different problem, clip that holds 5th on broke-common prob i understand). So i was left with lots of grinding in 1-4th. I have been told that chrysler used a transmission fluid with too high a sulfer content that eats the softer brass of the syncros. SO I ordered a remanufactured ax-5 from phoenix hard parts. they seem pretty decent and warrantee the transmission for bout a year. price was around $685 + core and 2way shipping. I havent installed it yet so ill let you know how that goes. If you do order one you have an external slave. also use the mt-90 fluid to prevent that happening again. GOOD LUCK!

i doubt trouble getting into first is a bad synchro... i don't think that first gear has a synchro... but you can still benefit from better fluid

Chrysler uses the right oil (GL3). The problem is the owner's manuals, Chilton's, Haynes, etc all recommend GL5 which will corrode the brass. GL3 is hard to find and I have only seen it at the Jeep stealership, but I wouldn't use anything other than the ones listeed above anyhow.

Synchromesh is not synthetic, but not too bad of a choice to run in the AX5.

Your best bet, and it may just fix your hard shift into 1st, is to put Redline MT90 in the transmission. It's a full-synthetic and usually smooths up the hardest of shifts. It may make your transmission last quite a bit longer.

Check with a transmission shop on the cost of replacing all the synchros if you bring the transmission in, out of the jeep. Removing/installing the transmission is the largest labor charge, and it's easy enough for the average mechanically inclined to do. Might as well replace all the synchros while the case is apart, chances are the rest are close to being shot.

Big thanks to DC for installing and recommending the wrong gear oil for the Aisin-Warner manual trannies, sure wish they would stand behind thier mistake
