Synchromesh is not synthetic, but not too bad of a choice to run in the AX5.
Your best bet, and it may just fix your hard shift into 1st, is to put Redline MT90 in the transmission. It's a full-synthetic and usually smooths up the hardest of shifts. It may make your transmission last quite a bit longer.
Check with a transmission shop on the cost of replacing all the synchros if you bring the transmission in, out of the jeep. Removing/installing the transmission is the largest labor charge, and it's easy enough for the average mechanically inclined to do. Might as well replace all the synchros while the case is apart, chances are the rest are close to being shot.
