Soooo...

I drove by an auto repair shop today and noticed a Jeep out front. Not just any Jeep, but a '91 Sahara. 5 sp., 4.0L, old style rollbar... some of you may remember me posting that exact description as my "favorite" Jeep.

It was nice. New Supertop, full doors... clean as a whistle.

It was curiously parked out front facing the road, almost as if it were on display, so I pulled in looking for a "for Sale" sign. There was none.

Taking a long shot, I jotted down the # on the building and left a message for the shop sayiong if it was for sale that I may be interested and left my #.

He called tonight.

'91 Sahara, 120K miles. It just had the transmission rebuilt (with clutch, PP, TO bearings), new brakes, rotors, and drums. He replaced the exhaust manifold because it was cracked (big surprise). He said there is not a spot of rust on it, body or frame. He said there's no leaks, it doesn't use oil, and it runs strong. Oh, and the AC works.

He wants $4995 and he said that price was firm because he needs the cash. I told him it was a bit high but I'd come take a look.

I think there is a good chance I will be overpaying for a Jeep very soon. Normally I am a cheap baaastid and hunt like mad for the best bargain out there but this is the Jeep I have always wanted and it sounds (and looked from what I've seen so far) like it is in great shape. All I can say is if it is as he described I'm all over it.

What pains me is I can't get over there to see it 'till Friday. He said he is going to wait to put a sign on it till after I look at it.

All I know is common sense is gone and I might as well go look at it with "Chump" written on my forehead as I want that Jeep bad.

Do I need to have sense talked into me or am I right to be giddy over this thing???

Oh yeah, he said he's throw in the hardtop for $500. I was thinking that would be the only bargaining chip I have, bring cash and tell him if he throws in the hardtop fop free he's got a deal.

Actually, looking at that pic, it's wrong. The Sahara has side steps and some pinstriping and the sahara logo. Hmmm.. I need to edit that.

Dang, you're a lot shorter than I thought you were....what are you, about 4'5"?:purple:

I say buy it....you'll be kicking yourself from here to judgement day if you don't. It's about time you get something to drive besides a yuppy grocery getter!

Alright, I've got to be the voice of sanity here. $5K IS steep. I've seen them sit and sit and sit around here (near Philly, not too far away). You're no stoop; you can fix what is ailing a Jeep... and that's part of the fun.

BUT... three things worth considering:

1. When I bought my CJ7, it was everything I wanted... V8, manual, A/C, hardtop & doors, softtop & doors. I got it for what I thought was a good price. In all honesty, I'd have paid twice what I did and wouldn't be sorry right now.

2. You know there can be a lot of little things wrong with Jeeps. My $1200 CJ5 quickly turned into a $1900 Jeep in a matter of 2 months. Check it up and down with that in mind. U-joints, bushings, e-brake cables, t-r ends, exhaust... etc. All that little crap that adds up to a lot of time and money. Also keep seriously in mind any upgrades it has that you would be doing anyway. The last YJ I looked at already had the 4.11's put in. Has the A/C been converted yet or are you going to spend a lot of time trying to find the old gas?

3. Sure it may not be the best investment, but it is the sweet spot for the YJs. How much time, effort, and money are you going to dump trying to find another '91?

Keep your head clear going in... if you faint, it's the right one.

-X

BTW- If you've never had one with A/C, don't expect a lot from it.

5G's is a fair price for that vehicle, if it is in as good as shape as you say it is. especially in the rust belt, a rust free YJ is getting rarer each winter.

I payed $3800 for my '91 and it had 190k on it, and he was asking $4200, (cash is louder than words)

The deal isn't too bad. Get it!

I don't think that's too bad. Price is directly proportional to just how "Rust Free" it is.

i guess we will see this friday!

Actually, the price is proportional to how bad a person wants to buy the vehicle. If their want is lower than the seller's need, the seller will have to lower the price.

Well, obviously that's a factor, but we've already established TC's need. The only unknown left is the condition of the vehicle. That will determine his "Want".
