P.O.'d @ Jeep

I had to take my 2005 Unlimited into the dealership last week. It has only 32K miles but it has been making a noise similar to a valve tap and it has been getting progressively louder. I also emits a chirp like sound when accelerating or when up shifting under harder acceleration. Last but not least the transmission shifts rough between 1st and 2nd gear.

Now my first thought was simple a U joint, and I could and would climb under it to check them all out, but it is under warranty and I have not done anything with it or taken it anywhere that would have warrented a U joint going bad already so I figured what the heck... let them worry about it since it's under warranty... right?

So I drop it off, and 2 days later they say it's done. I go to pick it up only to fing they say they cannot re-create the issue with the transmission or a chirping sound either. They said the tapping was the valves and they replaced all 12 lifters (they called them tapets). Now I am no master mechanic, but the tapping could not be heard at idle or sitting while revving the engine so I had pretty much ruled out the vales in my mind. I expressed to the guy at the counter that I was upset they didn't fix the other problems, and my reluctance to believe that the tapping was from the valves and you know what the jackass said to me?
"That's messed up. I'd seriously consider taking it somewhere else."

I said: "Nice advice. Somewhere else? Other than a Jeep dealer where I get warranty service? You gotta be F'n kidding me pal?!?!?!"

Already completely on fire with anger I took the keys and left before I blew up and made an ass out of myself.

Driving home the tap was still there, the transmission still shifted like crap, and it chirped between the 1st 4 gears under acceleration.

WTF?!?!??!?!


I'm done. I'm dumping the POS and never buying another Jeep. I'm keeping my '91 but until DC sells Jeep I will patronize them no more... even if they come out with the Gladiatior I am done.

I would try a different jeep dealership before giving up. I had to take the family truckster (Durango) to 3 different dealerships before they finally found the problems we were having. Sometimes it takes a little effort on our part to find out who hired the "smart ones".:-)

I didn't buy a newer Jeep with a factory warranty so I could hunt for good service or competent technicians.
 
Don't feel bad man, In Canada the Jeep dealer's are pretty much the same, they want to sell you the Jeep but when something goes wrong the MOFO's don't want to fix it or they give you some BS, So I wouldn't give up on Jeep just yet, buy a relativley new/used Jeep and do most of the work yourself.

Kinda like the Social Security deductions they take out of our checks every week, right?? I've always figured I'd be doin' all the work myself..............but I do feel TC's pain.
 
I feel your pain TC and know what your going through. But as Tallen says...try a different stealership, I know I did...I bought mine in 2001 and thought dealer loyalty but ending up going to two other stealerships till I re-discovered the one who wanted the most for the jeep when I was looking and didn't buy there.

Go in and take the service rep for a drive...let him hear what your hearing and let him feel the shifting problem. Thats the only way
 

TC, now that you're a little less PO'd, I would go back and ask for the GM and have him meet you in the service dept, Find the dude that told you to take it somewhere else. Call him on it in front of the GM or another higher up and express your dissatisfaction with their service. Sometimes, the people who care don't know what the ****ed off workers are doing. I think this is one reason why we have such poor customer service nowadays because many of us including myself just walk away instead of speaking with someone who may have something to lose. Regardless of what you could have said, your right, the customer is always right and this dude appears to have slept in the last customer service training. Good Luck
 
I feel your pain. I have been through this with the local Chevrolet dealer.
Try looking up factory service notes on the internet. I stumbled upon some Ford service notes once that included a lot of things that aren't sent out in Recall notices, but were common problem areas. Maybe you can figure out what the problem is from there.
Either way, I would return to the dealer and start with the Service Manager then the General Manager.
 

i had the same problem with a chevy dealership... took my z28 in for a bad window switch next thing i know they are passing me and my friend on the 4 lane doing the best side of 90 in my car.... my buddy damn near had to drag me off the shop manager and since then never took it back and never bought another car from them neither has my fam ... dont let the bad experience sway you away from jeep i understand you not feeling you should shop around for a shop but as consumers we sometimes have to bend over and take the big corporations sometimes
 
Stealerships suck. Some are good for pricing of vehicles, but poor in maintenance and vice versa. Try somewhere else. Also call Jeep and tell them what you are going through and let them know who you are. Knowing your past history with Jeeps may get them to step up and put the smack down. I had to gety dirt with Ford once over a set of EXPERIMENTAL brake pads they put in my brand new Probe. I had a whopping 9000 miles on the odometer and the brakes needed to be replaced. They didn't want to warranty them until I called Ford. Shortly after the stealership called me back and said Ford was covering the brakes. Interesting once the big guys find out about the stealerships BS they straighten things out a little.
 
Carmax made me a really nice offer today. Kind of shocked me what they are willing to pay for my Jeep. It's good for 7 days, but there's a strong possibility I may take it and buy a nice 06 Impala with 13K miles on it.

I will still own my '91 YJ.

I tell ya what, Carmax is a helluva great place, from what I've heard. It was started by somebody that was fed up with the way dealerships generally treat customers, and if I ever need to buy another car I can't find at my favorite small-time lot, I'd go there.
 
I hate Carmax. They only offered me $5000 for my wifes Eddie Bauer edition Ford Explorer that was in excelent condition. I ended up selling it for almost 3 times that much. But if they are willing to pay your price, go for it.

Sorry Harry, but I agree with everyone else. Take it to another dealership. You're right, you didn't buy a warranty only to have to "Hunt" for another dealership to get the service you paid for.

However, all businesses are like restaurants: one day John's the short order cook, and the food sucks. Everyone runs around telling everyone how horrible that restaurant is. Next day, Juan is the cook, and the food is art on a plate, and all rave about how great the food is.

You need to find a dealership with good mechanics, because GMs are different and hire differently.

I don't think so Mingez. I sold the LJ to Carmax on Tuesday for 16K (slightly above KBB's private party value) and bought an 06 Chevy Impala as a DD for $15998 (equal to KBB's trade in value). Retail on the Chevy is about $19K so I think I got a great deal.

The Chevy is the 4th vehicle I have bought in less than 2 years. 91 YJ (still have it), 06 Jetta (traded), 05 LJ (traded), and 06 Chevy (still have it). I also bought my wife an 05 Ford E350 12 passenger homeschool bus :lol: which could be considered #5, with a total of 7 different vehicles titled with my name on them in less than a 2 year period counting the '00 Caravan [sold] and the '00 XJ [sold]. As often as that is it still makes Sparky downright funky :lol:


SouthTJ the thing with Carmax is the price they'll give you on a trade is affected by how many they have as well as KBB, condition, etc. Maybe they were a little "heavy" on those at that time?

They had several Impalas on their surrounding lots so it was cheap. They didn't have one Unlimited so my timing was perfect.

I will say CARMAX's service was excellent and it was the easiest car deal I ever had at a dealership. They are all that they say they are.
