Yep, just carrying on a whole thread on my own 
I had autozone (i know, i know) check codes and it showed up as "ECM detected the battery temperature sensor signal too high"
Could that be right...the battery temp sensor is bad? The previous owner was the one who told me it was an ambient temp sensor...what does the battery temp sensor even do?

Im sorry to inform you that what you have on the pic is NOT an Ambient temp. sensor but instead looks like a coolant temp. sensor. the Part# for the Ambient Temp. Sensor is,56027872.

Your battery ambient temp sensor monitors the battery temp (well, the bottom of the battery) and allows the ECM to tailor the charge depending on the temp. Batteries need a little heavier a charge rate when they are cold and less when hot. To remove it just remove your battery and you'll see it in the center of the tray. Unplup the wiring harness connector under the tray and remove the sensor. I don't remember, but, I think you push-and-turn to remove the sensor (anyone else have their's out???). Your problem could be the connector or wiring to the sensor and not the actual sensor itself, though. Any acid leakage convieniently follows the temp sensor wires down to the connector. O.k. disregard my prior post. i have been searching for this ambient temp. sensor on the diagram but with no positive outcome. that part# is the intake air sensor, not the ambient temp. sensor.

Some of the Battery sensors just sits in the hole so as long as it has contact to the bottom of the battery. there should be a sort of wave washer between the sensor and battery tray to keep a light pressure on the bottom of the battery so it can accurately sense the battery temperature.Well, the sensor wasn't even there...just a plug dangling by itselfI bought one and put it in, and check engine light is gone! However, the sensor didn't "clip" into the battery holder at all, it just sits in the hole. Am I missing something that it should fit into?
yep there is a wave washer. I think I need to get something to hold that battery in place though, no strap or anything so I imagine it's bumping around. Thanks SteelHeadz!Crazy4diesels

Watch out for the positive terminal!!! It's right next to the fender (if they were all built the same way). So if your battery is not firmly clamped down you might short out:shock:. On TJs (are they all the same?) the battery is held in place by a wedge that gets screwed to the battery tray. It fits down low on the front of the battery. The tray should have a tab with a captive nut on the front edge and the wedge has a captive bolt. It takes a little patience to get it lined up and started. I always thought this was a weak design... Someday I'm going to add a crossbar and J-bolt setup to mine (like the old days). Best of luck - John
