Stock Steering Box

Hey all! I just wanted to know if it is possible to tighten the shaft comming from the steering wheel in the box. None of the other parts of the steering are loose or worn. I have quite a bit of play at the steering wheel, and it almost put me in the ditch today. Like I said, nothing else is losse, just the shaft going into the box from the steering wheel.

Thanks a mil

*Crickets Sound* Nobody knows? The muddy dirt roads are really starting to scare me! Not that I couldn't get out of the ditch with it mind you.;)

Yes there is an adjuster screw on the box. It changes the mesh of the gearing. Don't tighten it too much. Refer to your manual for exact instructions I had to adjust the manual box in my 93 YJ occasionally.

Thank you SOOOOOO much. That is all I needed to know. Just didn't want to open it up and find that I can't adjust it.:purple:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. So just to clarify, you don't need to do any disassembly to adjust the gear mesh in the steering box. The adjuster is external.

Should be a nut on top with a screw in the center of it. Loosen the nut, tighten the screw until the steering is how you want it, back the screw off about a 1/4 turn, tighten the nut. If it needs more adjusting, then do it.

Some boxes aren't adjustable though. If that's the case you'd have to rebuild it or get a new one.

Yeah, I figured it was external (After looking around and figuring it didn't make any sense to open it to adjust something like that). No more wandering of the roads :D It handles so much nicer. Thanks for the info(s)
