Shifter handle ????

We're installing a 2003 or 2004 4.0 engine with an automatic & its associated transfer case into my 1989 Wrangler that was a 4.2 with a 5 speed.
Before I go any further, I have to thank the folks here at this website for the huge help they're being to make this happen - I sing your praises to anyone who will listen!
That being said, the transmission shift cable is on the package that I bought as is the rod & pivot etc. on the transfer case. What's missing are the shift levers or handles themselves.
Will handles out of another Jeep like a Cherokee which seem to be more available work for me or do they have to be Wrangler and year spacific to work properly?
Pardon my ignorense! (Prob mis-spelled that one):?| :?|
Thanks,
Jim

The auto shifters for the cherokee and TJ were in a plastic console between the seats. You are not likely to get either console to fit properly in a YJ. Without the console the cherokee and TJ shifter would look ghetto fabulous.
I would recommend cracking open a Summit or Jegs catalog and find a cable shifter that will work for you.
A new transmission tunnel cover to cover up the hole left by the manual shifter will be easy to make.

you could just simply go with a universal after market T handle shifter from a manufacturer like B&M.. If you can source a new column with the shifter in it from a YJ and select MJ/XJ then you could go that route too.
