RE: welding spring steel

Hello all I am curious has any one ever used retread mud tires i found a place call high tec retreading www.high-tec-retreading.com and was wondering if any one had ever used retreads seems like a good way to get some tires for fairly cheap

Im also looking for tires...I was intersted in these tires before... I just looked again and its $380 for a set of 33's with shipping ... good deal if I lived wherever their place is so I could save the $80 shipping...
not bad but a local tire guy quoted me $475 (said he would go lower if I really wanted them)...mounted and balanced...(Remington Mud Brute) I believe for the extra money I would rather have brand new, decent name tires..

Hi Tec retreads have a good reputation. Those "green diamonds" would be nice in an area that gets alot of ice.

I've used a set in 31", they held up well onroad and off, I had no problems. I know of two other jeepers in my club that each had a set, with no problems. This was before the 'green diamond' technology, so we have no experience with that. Great bang for the buck.

cool sounds like i may be trying a set of retreads have no use for the green diamonds dont get much ice in south texas but it definitely sounds like i may be trying a set of em

Retreads are cheap for a reason. Once when the tread came off all my tires a few years back my mechanic asked me if they were retreads; he said they are notorious for that. I heard somewhere that some states have made them illegal, including CA. Unless they have come out with new retread technology, I would just buy new tires.

Broken rear axle

The technology is safe, and the states that have outlawed them have generally done so only on the steer axles on the big rigs.

The tire caps you see on the side of the interstate are off the big rigs retreads, and it's because they generate a ton of heat with that kind of weight on a tire low on air. You can't apply the same argument to a Jeep.

I worked for FEDEX before and they will not let the 18 wheelers use retreads ..at least in Louisiana i think

Re: RE: Re: RE: Question to moderators

Retreading can be done by proper technique or it can be done by a bassackwards backyard method. If they are done properly they are just as safe if not stronger than new tires. As I said earlier, hightec has a very good reputation for quality. If you choose to go that route, you will not shed a "gator" on the road.

Re: RE: Heard of this Winch?

Well I am ordering a set of 33's as well for my rig from Hi-Tec-Retread. Yes recaps are banned in some states for BIG RIGS and yes the ban applies to steering wheels(front) and I believe drive wheels. I would think that a company such as HiTec Retread having been in business 35 years would be reputable. Also, speaking only for myself, I drive my jeep 1 or 2 times a week to work and on weekends, probably not putting more than 10,000 a year on my tires, so I am not concerned too much with Long Life of a "new" tire..just my .02 worth

Okay, i've got to ask if you guys are asking about re-treads or re-caps???

Re-treads are tires that were made with significantly thicker compounds on the top that touches the road. When they wear down, they simply groove a new patern into them.

Re-caps,which I think you all are talking about...are where the put a new outer piece (part that touches the road) onto the tires. These ARE what you see on the side of the road from the semis.

Re-treads are as safe as regular passenger car tires. Semi's do run both of these types, but they also run regularly manufactured tires as well.

No heat

And yes, like Bounty said, the caps on the side of the road are from low air pressure. Usually because they get a flat, or a slow leak, and the driver doesn't notice it right away.

Low air pressure on any tire is bad. With my Swampers, if I leave the pressure at 5 or 6 and drive on the road, they will be WAY too hot to even touch. If I leave them at the standard 18 that I run on the road, they are just right.

Hope that makes some sense

RE: do you guys think these is a fair price for these my jee

Truth be known, tractor trailers use dual wheels and if there is an object lodged between them or improper inflation can cause even a brand new tire to shread on those rigs.

RE: T-case rebuild

Well I said I was going to order some of these tires...I called the guys up at Hi Tec Re.... and he told me the side walls will not match.I know it has nothing to do with tread but I hate mismatched tires..Orded Maxxis Buckshots this morning...free shipping but $130 more for the tires :(

RE: Re: RE: FYI. Law in Florida says you can take the doors

good point 88.... the term "retread" has seemed to replace the term "recap" - you are right - retread refers to tires that have new grooves cut into them (you will see the word "re-groovable" on the sidewall...) as far as safety - back in the day i used to buy recaps all the time (bias ply) for my cars - never had a problem - if done right on a good carcass, they are very reliable... no experience with recapped radials though...

Steering problem after stuck, HELP!!!

Good point, DerekC, and one I hadn't considered. In the "good old days" when I was younger and poorer and drove junk, that wouldn't have mattered. But my "baby's" tires gotta match.
