You could fill a 5-gallon gas can, then run the Jeep till it's empty (stay close to a gas station, though), pour in the 5-gallons to get you to the pumps, then see how much more it takes to fill it. However, if you run the tank dry, be prepared to replace the fuel filter, as it may suck a lot of debris out of the tank into the filter.

My 81 CJ 7 has a 15 gallon tank.
Mine have always had the smaller 15 gallon tank. I think a quick way to tell is if the space between the gastank and the spring is equal on both sides you have the larger(19 or 20 gallon) tank, and if the space is different you have the smaller tank. I think that's what it was anyway :?

The stock 15 gallon only hangs about 4 inches below the frame rails. The larger 22 gallon hangs a lot lower. You should know which one you have when you run it down toward empty and then go to fill it up.
