i'm not sure what i need to get rid of but i got rid of the bbd and put on a motorcraft and i ditched all the smog equipment so what do i need the puter in it for any more. i'm not sure whats left to keep it for. other than that i cant get the carb to idel right sometimes it is around 100 rpms sometimes its around 650 rpms. its got a manual choke on it so its not that. it also surges when idleing. any sugestions ? thanks people your help is always great to have

The computer is just another piece of smog equipment, and is not required for the jeep to run. However, I would be hesitant to remove alltogether as I'm not sure how the wiring is hooked up. As for the surging idle, I would check for vacuum leaks. Also, how is the ignition set up? If the computer is still hooked up to the ignition, it could screw things up.

RE: A few Anniversary pics......

i am thinking of doing the nutter bypass for awhile but have held out due to the fact that i am changeing the gauges out and the only one i need a feed from is the fuel. if i can get it to work right. lol i know good luck right. well i will find a way. just takes time. thanks guys

RE: My last trail run

Hi-Ya slo-wrench44,

I would leave the computer (MCU) in the Jeep.

Three reasons:

(1) Until such time as you perform a "Nutter bypass," you DO need a functional computer because the computer controls engine ignition timing. (You make no metnion of having done the HEI mod.) Replacing the Carter BBD with a Motorcraft 21XX solves only carburetion problems.

(Number 1 is also a clue as regards your question about the surging idle speed.)

(2) Someday, you/someone might have to return the Jeep to being smog-legal. Having the computer available would make that project feasible.

(3) I cannot recall seeing a post regarding this topic, but a sub-page off the first of the two hyper-links that TwistedCopper supplied above, shows the CJ underhood diagnostic connectors.

These:

Those connectors can be a super-handy aid to the diagnosis of ailing CJ-YJ innards, especially for those Jeepz-sters who must maintain their Jeeps so as to be smog-legal.

Removing the MCU will kill the functionality of many of the diagnostic connectors.

This is, of course, your call. Even after doing a Nutter bypass, however, if the computer doesn't degrade vehicle performance, why remove the computer?

What is to be gained?
