87 Wrangler...

Okay you YJ freaks! About to go look at a YJ to buy. Tell me everything I should know about it. It's a six cyl, but obviously not the HO.

So give me the 411. The down low. Los informaciones. The know how for the moe howw. JK.

Seriously, tell me something.

The non-HO 6cyl. YJ will have the Carter carb which was plagued with problems, usually poor idle and rough running. Chances are the catalytic converter will clog up if it's never been replaced. '87 to '89.5 5spd will be the Peugeot BA10/5 which has a bad rap of being weak and problematic. I had one, even installed a 350 in front of it, and it never gave me any trouble. Some '87 YJ's had the NP207 transfer case instead of the 231 used in most other late model jeeps.

As for the TJ, it's got a car dash and car springs, stick with a jeep ;)

Mingez don't worry about the carb, it is workable through some easy mods. I have one and it idles fine.

Not much more to add, the motor has alot of torque, but not much HP. My Transmission has 138K on it and it is smoother than the one that was on my 92. That may be a fluke but it's true.

Check for frame rot. Especially at the rear in front of the shackles. My 92 had rot there but I had it fixed for free. My '88 is rust free (knocking on wood).

Pretty much anything esle is fixable if the drivetrain is solid.

I can speak for 6 months of experience with a '94......I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta love that "car dash/car springs" comment, though!!! I'll have to remember that one!

Psh I am down the the round not hip and square. Square isnt a jeep trait.

Yo, I went to check that POS out. Dang thing had square lights on it. So I said "No"!!

JK hehehehe.. I was a POS though. Thing was rusted out as all hell. How??? Seeing as I live in New Mexico, it's hard to get that kind of rust on a vehicle out here. Oh well, the search continues. Will check out the TJ tommorrow.

:x It is at my house!

AMC/Jeep finally got the look just right, and about ten years later Chrysler took the bold perfected Jeep look, and well.... enter the TJ.

P.S. I gave "tugger" (from the movie) a little help in that department. (see avatar)

I'll probably convert the lights to round if I get a YJ.

Why don't you put a Liberty front clip on your XJ while you're at it

Now Harry, that was a low blow and you know it. :)

Yeah, that was a low blow. Not quite as low as drawing square headlights on that poor little flat fender though. General Patton is rolling in his grave. Can you imagine how much the Germans would have laughed at us if we showed up at WW2 with square headlights?

No doubt about it, you've angered the Jeep gods. I wouldn't be surprised if that YJ of yours fell apart and spontaneously combusted later today while just sitting in the yard.

A friend of mine used those $9.99 "touch lights" on his Jeep for round headlights. It was a hilarious story! He lost his headlight power on the way home one night, so he stopped at Wally World and bought two touch lights, zip-tied'em onto the grill of his TJ, and drove home that way on the New Jersey Freeway!! No, they didn't put out enough light to drive by, but with all the other cars, all he needed was something that looked like headlights so the cops wouldn't pull him over!! I suppose you could do that with a YJ.....that is if you want to make your YJ look like an inferior TJ!

j/k.....I love TJ's.......they make good anchor points for pulling other TJ's out of the mud!!

Then there is the so called "dash" in the TJ, along with the ridiculous center console setup. TJ's are nice rigs, too nice to be a jeepers jeep.

what are doors worth???

My God! what a bunch of TJ bashers! Mrs. Mud knows from where you speak ('94 YJ - "L'il Red") so I listen to this all the time.....I love L'il Red to death.......she's the reason I bought my TJ (Jeep, because of Red - TJ 'cause it was more financially doable - WAY upside down). I just want y'all to know, when I get my pointy-nosed, round-eyed Willys truck, you've got some pay back comin'!!

BTW - Mingez, go SWB and you'll never go back (regardless of which "J" it is!)

Yeah, I love my XJ.. I won't say it's better or worse than driving a SWB Jeep. Just different, and can do things SWB's can't. I'll never part with 6 Pack.

I've wheeled quite a bit of different rigs. Wranglers, new and old, Broncos, Samurai's, FJ40's, full size Bronco, Blazer, and I must say, the Early Bronco is the most fun, followed by the Samurai (strangely had a blast) next the Wrangler and fj40. But the XJ is just as fun to drive.

LOL Nothing personal, just trying to put it into perspective.

C'mon, it's not like I would do it to a real one
I did that a while back, can't believe nobody said anything before...
