YJ trans torque arm

While replacing the transmission mount yesterday, I found the torque arm had been bent badly (probably during a low clearance hit). The replacement bushings had already been purchased but the REAL question is ... is that torque arm really neccessary?

If it is, then I'll go to the local hardware store and rig up something as the factory replacement is probably like gold!!

Thanks for the assist.

Factory replacement is like $12, and I wouldn't run without it or you'll risk breaking the motor mounts and/or transmission mount.

The torque arm provided by the factory is minimal for what its supposed to do. You need it otherwise your askin for trouble.

Re: YJ trans torque arm - UPDATE

Purchased all new torque arm hardware at my local DC dealership ... WOW ... the torque arm was missing a number of pieces. This is no doubt on account of the previous owner not understanding the significance of the assembly.

The transmission mount has now been replaced with polyurethane.
The torque arm hardware is all new.
The torque arm rubber mounts replaced (also with polyurethane).

All of these installed per manufacturer and I can FEEL the difference. Even my wife picked up on a bit more transmitted engine vibration through the seat but it is not objectionalble.

One other thing ... an annoying "clunk" I experienced from a standing start is now gone.

Next up, polyurethane motor mounts!

If you think you notice and little more vibe now, you'll get a ton more engine vibe with the poly engine mounts. Rubber is better throughout.

I like the feel of the more bomb proof motor mount. It stiffened up the lag of the motor twisting and the clutch feels alot smoother. It feels more like you can let the clutch go faster. I hate the way my transmission bounces around on the rubber mounts. Poly should be the way to go on the transmission mount. I am going to change that mount soon also. One thing I did notice though. The stiffer mounts make the jeep spin the wheels more on wet pavement. Be careful you dont spin out the first time it rains. Could this loss of traction be a minus factor. maybe.
