Why No More 4.0L??

I can't figure this out, maybe somebody can help me with this. I was reading not to long ago the Jeep is no longer using the 4.0L in the Jeep Wrangler in 2007. Instead there going with the freaking bagless mini van engine. In my experiences the 4.0L is one of the best working straight sixes if not the best, plenty of low end power and high end power, grant you nothing beats a V-8 but for the straight 6 guys and gals the 4.0L is supreme in my opinion. Let me know your thoughts on the scraping of the 4.0L if you think Chrysler is on crack or maybe you like the idea of getting rid of the 4.0L whatever let me know your thoughts.

Uhhhh well, lets see... They can use the same engine in more cars, they eliminate the need to make a different one and thereby cut costs.

Plus the numbers are better for the masses. Better fuel mileage makes the grennies happy and less face it. At 3.00 $$ or more a gal it does start making scince. Besides you can always get your performance back with mods and gearing.

Makes perfect sense to me. I rented a Mini van recently and didn't think it was that gutless. Besides, I think there will be far more performance mods come out for the V6 than there are for the 4.0.
I do like the 4.0 though.

I think it was based on the minivan engine, but different. I would bet many would say the Ford 300 was a better straight six. RIP 4.0L as it was a great engine.

Hey Bounty Hunter, good point the Ford 300 six was a great inline 6 maybe better than the 4.0L but I guess I can say I'm a little bias not much of a ford guy, thats not taking anything away from the 300, it was great. And I guess the V-6 isn't so bad, there's always mods and better gearing like yjdave mentioned.

I was quick to knock the mini van engine as well, but my friend just bought a 2007 JK Rubicon and I must say that i've been nothing less than impressed. That was when it was stock. He just put an Airaid intake on it and a Flowmaster exhuast. You'd never know that was a mini van engine under the hood, never.

I test drove the new Rubicon as well, and the engine performed really nice. It had enough power (I would say at least the same as the 4.0L that I drove about a week ago, and which did have mods; granted, the 4.0L was runing 33" tires, but it was also regeared). And I think the aftermarket will offer all kinds of options for this engine as they did for the 4.0L, possibly (and we will not know until more options become available) you will be able to get much more power from the V6 than the I6 (at least it will be in the same category).

Cool, I did not know that the new JK Wrangler performed as well as it does, I read some reviews oh some experts saying that it was gutless, Picked up the latest issue of JP just haven't had a chance to read it. Thanks everyone for the valuable info on the new Wrangler.

I think that there may also have been a safety issue with the 4.0--less of a crush zone as compared with a V6 (or even V8), perhaps?
