What years/models have the 258?

I'm trying to find an oil dipstick for an '80 CJ5 with a straight 6. I initially assume it is the 4.2 (258 ). When calling a junkyard, what other vehicals can I say have the same motor? Do the 6 cyl YJ's have the 4.2 or the 4.0? Was that changed when FI was added? Did any of the Cherokee's have the 4.2 or just the 4.0?

On a side note, I've seen headers in the Quadratec book for a 72-80 CJ w/ 232. Huh? I'm aware of the 225 V6 in older ones, but was a 232 offered or is this a mistake?

Thanks all,

-X

The YJs came with the 4.2 up till 1991 which was the first year they put the FI 4.0 in the wrangler. I'm not sure if the XJs made the change at the same time or earlier... hopefully this narrowed it down for ya.

cherokee's never used the 4.2...the 232 and 258 I-6 share most everything outside the block. Look for 70's early 80's AMC stuff like madador, eagle, and cjs ,yjs.

The 232 was a shorter stroke 258. The 232, 258, and 242(4.0) are all from the same engine family, the second gen AMC inline six. Alot of parts will interchange between the different engines. I would assume that any 232 or 258 dipstick and tube would work, not sure about the 4.0.

Like already said, check AMC and early Eagle cars. Some mailtrucks had them. Fullsize Jeeps.
