this morning i had to move my jeep so my mom could get out of the driveway, and no reverse , i have a 4.2 i-6 auto, (88yj) i pumped the petal a bit and it was like i was in nuetral? finally she poped into gear, but i didn't like the feeling that i couldn't back up. what can it be. i checked the transmission fluids last week and levels were good and no leaks, if you have any ideas or suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

Pics are online......

have you checked your Clutch fluid?? Or do you have a Manual Clutch?

Sounds like you have a leak in our slave or master cylinder. Check the fluid level in you clutch master cylinder. Look around your bell houseing and see if you can find evedance of a leak there abouts.

Also it is a good idea to drain the transmission and replace the fluid with either Redline (hard to find and costly but worth it) or take a trip to Autozone and pick up some Peenzoil Syncromesh to replace the old fluid with the AX15 that I think you have will shift like a new one and be so happy you did.

Good Luck and hope I am aiming you in the right direction Tug

If he does in fact have a manual, it's a Peugeot BA10/5 which isn't prone to damage by high-sulfer GL5 gear oil like the Aisin Warner trannies.

I have an AUTOMATIC, does the same apply? i have crawled around underneather her and no evidence of any leaks. and as i said the fluid levels are good. What do i do next???????

How long did it take to go into reverse. I had a work truck that took a few seconds to engage. I was told the clutch packs were going bad. The trans lasted about a year after that.

even with transmissions that do not have brass synchros, synchromesh fluid has been said to make worlds of difference.... other than that... you did say you have an auto.. which i am not too familiar with... when you said you "pumped the petal", were you referring to the brake?

Another one of those tire questions...

My 99 TJ has sort of the same thing going for it, when i try to engage reverse, it makes a loud clunk sound, jerks a bit, then acts like nothing ever happened and backs up fine. It also feels like when i engage reverse, it drops like an inch. Any ideas?

Disreguard all I said, I know nothing about and auto other than I do not want one in a Jeep! Sorry you have troubles here. Tug

Mxpx182lit, that sounds like every lifted auto TJ I've seen, it's normal.

sounds like you're probably high mileage.. take it to a transmission shop.. you need a rebuild. its the clutch packs.

Ray, This may have nothing to do with what your experiencing and I have very little info or knowledge about early jeep autos but my mothers 02 300m was doing the same thing, is was a faulty vaccume (can't spell) line. Not sure on the set up you have?
