Transmission Question

OK heres my problem. My transmission went out on my 93 YJ and needs to be replaced. I have the opportunity to buy a 92 YJ for $1000 with a strong transmission and while im almost sure the two transmissions will are the same and can be swapped an idiot mechanic that my mother knows said they cant be. I promised my parents I would find out for sure if they can be swapped. Does anyone (or everyone) tell me if they can be. They are both 4cyls and both 5-speeds. Thanks

They can be swapped. The '93 used a different clutch than the '92, so be sure to use all the '92 parts like bellhousing, throwout bearing, clutch, etc.

I've done this many times, so post if you have any questions along the way.

It's likely the '92 isn't that good a transmission since Chrysler recommended the wrong gear oil in every owner's manual and all the trannies have a short life because of it. Much better to find a '94+ transmission so you can also change to an external clutch slave. This requires the '94+ bellhousing, clutch arm, clutch master cylinder, etc.

Check the flywheel, you may need to use the '92 flywheel.

If you want to keep the '93 flywheel and bellhousing, that may be possible, just make sure the input shafts of the two trannies are identical.

my 93 transmission went.. and got a transmission from 91.. the inputs were different... i had to get a pilot machined from bronze because there wasn't the right bearing availible anywhere

Could you have used the '91 flywheel and been okay, or was it a difference the crank of each engine?

it was the reciever in the crank
