Miller Jeep Trail PICs!

So I was offroading this weekend with some MA/CT jeepin guys, (jps4jeep, bostonjeep, lauraboston, 88wranglred, etc) and I am going over some decently sized rocks considering I have a bone stock 93 YJ. Unfortuantly I am having the most trouble getting over the obstacles and on one of them I slammed down on my transfer case skid plate which holds up my transmission etc. It just so happens that where the skid plate bolts into the frame was very rusted and it gave out, so we had to prop up my skid plate with some ratchet straps, which worked to get me through the rest of the trails, but still leaves me with a major problem with my jeep.

Here's the deal, I just bought this jeep from a used car dealer on tuesday, and this happened saturday. I have a standard warranty through a warranty company for 12 months/18k miles (i am not sure if this is covered in it) and the dealer gave me his 30 day 50% on repairs basic warranty. Since it is a rusted frame its a major deal.

My question is what are my options, is this gonna be covered in my warranty, should the dealer take care of it? does this qualify it as a lemon car? I'm really at a loss for what I should do, as this is my daily driver I need a solution ASAP.

Any opinions help

Brian

If it was me, I´d spary the underside liberally with used oil (to cover the skid marks from the rocks), take it for a ride down a dusty trail. Find a place that fixes trucks (not cars) ask for an estimate (even if it costs) take it to another shop, don´t say anything about already having an estimate. Take it back to the original dealer, the estimates helps keep him honest, it´s standard procedure to double the price of repairs, then give you half of it back. Don´t say anything about driving off road, when the guy starts giving you crap, point out the oil and ask about warranty coverage for that problem also. Complain about strange noises.
Don´t feel guilty about BSing the dealer, he´ll do it to you any chance he gets. I only treat them right, if they treat me right, which is rare.

I agree with mudderchuck. You should not have to be S.O.L. because of problems that where already on the Jeep. You are lucky that this happened now rather than later. Good luck and be persistent.-Al

AX 15 Transmission (manual) from a 95 or newer Wrangler

don't feel that you are being dishonest with them either... they will try to mess with you, and are really good at it... and don't be afraid to use the word "lawyer"

Definately take it for an estimate then go to the dealer and see what he says, don't forget to mention all the rust....when i got mine about 2 months into it the slave cylinder went out and got it towed directly to him after talking to some guys at my local texaco they quoted me 600 for a new clutch then I said hey, whats the deal, you said the clutch was in great shape....he ended up fixing it completely free, even though it isn't on the warranty

Mudder chuck has a good idea about the oil! And remember clean it! I know most have not seen the pictures, but I saw brian first hand bouncing off rocks and stuff, he is dirty! I think I emailed you, My frind does nothing but work on frames and floor boards, so if you want, I can take you there! get an estimate!

yeah johnny we should do that, soon, whenever you are available next cause I want to get a quote on it before I goto the dealer and such.

Let me know

What type of shop should I goto to get this repair work done, I need it ASAP...do normal auto body places do it or do I need to find a special welding type shop....

Hello 93bizzle,

If you have no luck with the dealer...

In my locale, there are automotive shops that specialize in frame repair. If that sort of shop exists (almost certainly) in your area, look in the Yellow Pages under "automotive, frame repair."

If you end up fixing the frame at your cost, I would suggest going to a frame specialty shop as opposed to a general repair garage. State laws vary, but in some states, the laws regarding the repair of frames are very strict.

Sooner or later (assuming your state has periodic vehicle inspections) your Jeep will have to be inspected and certified roadworthy. You want any frame repairs done right the first time.

Regards,

Gadget

i hope that wasnt an authorized dealer. if it was i would just clean it up and throw some used oil on it to cover up scratches and take it back, walk into the show room and start yelling about how the engine and trans almost fell out on the high way and threathen to sue, thats how i usually get something done somethin gliek that happenbed to my wheels that almost fell off after i left sears, they said not our problem so i said if it falls off and i kill a little kid and his grandmother its gunnab your problem and they bought me a new tire wheel 5 studs, lugs brakes and a drum, it worked out pretty nice.....

Talked to the dealer (small used car dealer) he said "no problem, you can bring it here and we'll take care of it or take it to your own guy long as its a reasonable price" So I'm gonna take it to get it done the RIGHT WAY, so what would be better, a frame shop or an auto body to get the frame fixed the best

Well, take it to a specialized shop if it is available. He's paying for it, so you will be okay, and well, you may as well get it done right.-Al
