TJ stock bumper winch compatibility

I'm a little ways off from getting a winch but I wanted some opinions.
I have a 2004 TJ X with stock bumpers. What do you recommend regarding winches and bumpers? It appears that many people go with an aftermarket bumper when adding a winch. Are the stock bumpers strong enough on the TJ for a decent winch attachment/use? I don't mind drilling holes in the bumper, if needed. But...dropping a few hundred on a new bumper is also okay with me if that's the quality route.

The bumper really has little to do with the winch. You'll be needing a winch mounting plate (various kinds out there - watch the "universal" ones - get measurements!). The plates basically use the same bolts and bolt-holes as the bumper - mounts the winch to the frames, which is what you want. Had mine mounted with the stock bumper 'til my son made me a "custom" bumper for Christmas. Now it's mounted with that.

You dont need the new bumper for the winch. Aftermarket bumpers are just stronger and can take more abuse than a stock bumper. There are tons of people who run stock bumpers with winches and they work fine.
