I am sure this has been asked before but, i am gonna do it anyway.. I am planning on installing the RE4.5" lift on my 94yj. do i really need to install the SYE kit??? I know people who have 4" lift's with 2" shakle lifts still running the stock drive shaft with no ill effects.. as of yet.
i have a buddy who has a 4" lift with the stock drive shaft.

Re: JEEP FOR SALE

are you talking a lift by 2" extended shackles... or a 2" lift via shackles... i've never heard of a 2" lift via shackles NOT affecting something

No you do not really need to install one, but pick up a couple pairs of u-joints, a spare drive shaft and some pinion yokes with straps, cause your gonna do some damage, unless you replace your ujoints once a month. you will throw the drive shaft off. due to the drastic angle of the shaft and the premature wear on the u-joints.

The way I look at it is, pay the money and prevent the problem than breaking it, and fixing it a couple times which will probably cost more.

You will be fine with a transfer case drop kit and the 4.5" lift, but the SYE is the way to go, if you have the $$. I do carry spare u-joints with me all the time. If you go wheeling without the t-case drop, you'll yank that yoke out on your first hill.

I plan on doing it in the future. I just did not want my jeep to be down too long when i put the lift kit on.
Now if I install the lift kit now and down the road i put the SYE on do i need to then remove the transfer case drop kit?
thanks for all of the input and feedback.

I put the RE4.5" in on mine. i put the SYE kit in cause i had the money to do it. i still had some vibes but then i replaced the 2º shims that came with the kit for 8º and it rides like a dream. i had moral issues with the t-case drop kit, i just couldnt see myself putting a lift in and taking away ground clearance with the drop kit. true, its only a few inches, but life is a game of inches. took me about 6 weeks to get the jeep back on the road. that was working on it after class everychance i could get.

longislandjeep,

so you did not use the t-case drop kit at all?? that is another thing i was curious about is the shims. I have heard that the 2.5 degree shims are not enough.
i plan on doing the sye kit just don't know if it is right now or in about a month.. i guess it would not hurt to do it now.

where did you get your sye kit and drive shaft..
