i want to change the gears in my jeep but the 4x4 shop in my area want $1500 for gears front and rear plus installation, does that price sound right? i want to put 4.88s in stock 30 and 35 w/ 33inch tires, planning on 35s soon. - does that sound good? let me here you opinions.

No. That's a rip-off. Alot of regular garages have mechanics that can correctly install R&Ps. Got a racetrack of any kind nearby? Go there and ask the guys in the pits if they know anybody that installs gears on the side. I guess pricing could be determined somewhat by location, but 1500 bones sounds pretty high to me.

You'll need those gears for the 35s, but going to a numerically higher gear ratio provides more torque multiplication and the next component in line has to be able to handle that extra torque. In this case, the next component in line is a 27 spline axle shaft. Just remember it will be even more likely to snap a shaft with the lower gears. I'd go limited slip unless you absolutely have to have a locker. In that case, the super-pricey Super35 kit with the truss would increase durability greatly and it comes with the locker. At that point though, an axle swap starts looking good.

yeah like Junk said that 35 in the rear with a set of 35s on 'em..prolly will be prone to breakage if you wheel alot. I'd say consider swappin out the rear with somthing stronger before you do that regear. I got 33s on my stock 35 and i'm not going any larger without a stronger axle.

ya do an axle swap take it from a man who ahs gone through 2 sets of spider gears a carrier 2 r&p's and numerous axle shafts out of a dana 35... that was all after 4.88s and 33" tires. trust me take care of yourself now and you be thankful later... now axles,i got my 60 from currie.. it was overkill but if you plan on going with bigger meats in the future a 60 is the way to go... or even a 9" but if you plan on sticking w/ 35's i would say do an 8.8 swap or a 44 just my 31234289463275482358234 cents :D

i have a friend that has practically the same jeep, 35in tires and 4.88s, and he runs the sh** out of it, i even saw him break a u-joint trying to peel out, but hes never had any problem with the axle, but he does have posi. i have a set of 44s from a Wagoneer, but i was saving those for when i drop in the 360 and 727 from the Wagoneer, dont know what to do?

Strange poping noise in front end.

I got my 4.88's R&P installed parts and labor $750 at the local Off-Road shop. They did a great job so it was worth the price to me....
