Hi all,
I've been having a pinging problem with my 05 Wrangler (w/4.0 and 6 spd). It has pinged for a couple of years now if I push it too hard. This made driving on the highway nearly impossible since I don't want to destroy the engine. I have talked to lots of people about it and most have said it should not ping with the ping sensor in place. The manual (Chrysler shop manual) does not mention a ping sensor but my Jeep seems to have one mounted to the side of the block near the oil filter. Oh, well... I have lived with this for a long time.
So, sometime back I put in a set of Bosch platinum plugs. On cool damp days when I could push the engine a little and acually drive I noticed the plugs seemed to give much better performance than the old stock ones (I did NOT believe this but it really seemed so). The old ones were kinda worn (rounded over electrodes) so I know the spark was not as good as it could have been. Still pinged though, just like before...
OK... 30K miles later - time for a new set of plugs. They did not have the same Bosch platinum plugs in stock but they did have Bosh platinum +4 plugs in stock. Hmmm... Airplanes used to run four prong plugs for reliability (maybe they still do...) - OK, I'll try them. First thing I noticed was the reach was about 1/4 inch less than the stock (and previous platinum) plugs. Also you can not gap these and the gap is quite a bit bigger than spec. I put them in and drove the Jeep.
THE PING IS GONE!!! I can drive normally (well, as normally as I drive:lol::lol
. I can push it along at 70MPH - NO PING. Must be the gas, I thought. Well, after a couple of months and several brands of gas - NO PING.
So, I really think the ping was caused by too long a reach on the plugs. I remember my 78 CJ7 had a long reach too (but you could just retard the timing a little and get the ping to go away - along with a few MPG). I bet the tips of the plugs were glowing too much and causing the ping. These new short reach plugs probably don't glow. I don't understand why this happened - maybe my ping sensor really is not working after all. Sorry for the long post - I must have had too much coffee today:lol: - John
