RE: Paragon Feb 19th

HELP! ! ! I really Fudged it up on this move. I cracked the timing cover on the '77 360 trying to pry it off ! Any body out ther have any extra parts? The cover of an AMC 304 will work too. anybody have any words of advice or condolences?[/b]

That sucks. That is an expensive part to buy new, and junkyard replacements are a 50/50 gamble. That's one of those AMC parts that you always buy, even if you don't need it, when a good deal comes around. Make sure the junkyard guarantees it, if you choose to go that route.

As far as I know...... like most other AMC engine parts, it will work on any of the post-1967(?) AMC V8s. Don't just look for 360s and 304s. The displacements were 290,304,343,360,390, and 401. I got my AMC 401 out of a 74 International Travelall.

Used ones are a gamble. Not only is it the timing cover, but also the housing for the oil pump. Aluminum oil pump housings wear easily causing the engine to have low oil pressure.
My opinion...it was probably worn out anyway. Put a brand new one one there so that you have good oil pressure. I think 4WD Hardware and others have them for around $250. This is one crucial part that I wouldn't recommend buying used unless you can verify that the pump gear to housing distances are within tolerance and free of scratches. I don't know off hand what the tolerance is. Check a Chilton Manula for that one.

RE: timig cover?

Excuse me:
$204.95 for the housing with front main seal
$289.95 for the housing plus new pump gears and lower pump housing.
Prices from Quadratec.
