Jeep swap question

Yes here is another Jeep swap question!

I have a 1995 YJ and it has the 2.5L with the manual transmission. I would like to swap in a 4.0L with and automatic transmission! Here is the question of the day!

Can I use a Cherokee for the swap? I know I would have to get a 1995 or newer to keep CA. smog at bay.

I guess what I need to know will the engine and the transmission fit from the XJ to my YJ? I know it will take some engine mounts and transmission mounts but will the over all length fit? Did YJ’s come with this same set up? What about the computer in them to make the darn thing run will it fit into the YJ?

Did anyone set up a web site with step by step swap?

It'll fit, and has been done. You'll need the 'puter and wiring harness from the donor vehicle, as well as the transmission computer (behind the glove box).

The AW4 auto transmission in the XJ has never come from the factory in a Wrangler. It's a good strong overdrive transmission for the swap.

The transfer case in the cherokee is clocked lower than in the YJ, so you'll need to redrill the mounting flange on the end of the AW4 transmission to clock the transfer case up. You'll also need a different transfer case input shaft if you use your current 231 transfer case.
