H-4 headlights

RE: need space for tires, what

I've had my H-4 headlights in for a little over a year now and broke one last week. The lens is backordered 3 weeks at the factory so instead of waiting the 3 weeks, I bought two new H-4 lenses of a different brand. Man what a difference! I didn't really notice much of a difference between my stock headlights and my old H-4's but with these new lenses, there's a huge difference. My old H-4 lenses had little lines going across the left side of each light to prevent the light from blinding oncoming traffic. These new lenses don't have these lines and the reflector seems to be a lot better. I had a friend drive towards me and he says it's not blinding at all. A little piece of advice for whoever is thinking about getting H-4 lenses...shop around and don't get the ones that block the light out of one side. There's a huge difference.

What kind were your old ones and what kind did you replace them with? I got some JC Whitney lights with 55/100 watt bulbs but haven't had a chance to run them yet.

i have the full crystal lenses... no lines to block light

i hooked them up through a relay and got about 20% more output...

i'm gonna get some 80/100 watt lights from a snowmobile shop

My XJ had some cheapo Wagner halogens in it when I got it. My father-in-law even asked me if my lights were on one night. He was being sarcastic, but they were pretty dim.

I replaced them with a set of Sylvania silver star lights and they are very bright.

My buddy is ordering me in some different bulbs too. I think he said they're 75/100 watts.

As for the brand name, I'm not sure but I'll check when I have a chance. I don't have the old light here.

question about soa

What kind are your new ones? I looked and the ones I got from whitney were eagle eye (the housings) and the bulbs were CEC diamond white 100/55 bulbs. I put them in and didn't even drive the jeep at night before I left (that jeeps at the parents). I have the "wife's rig" here and am planning on upgrading those bulbs to H4 too (as well as adding relays to both) so if there's something substantially better out there that doesn't cost an arm and a leg I'll try em out.
Thanks

There's nothing on the light that says what kind they are. I'll ask my friend who ordered them to his shop for me tomorrow. The new lenses I got have two additional lights that mount in the sides. They come in different colors and when lit up, it lights the outside perimeter of the light...just a gimic. Mine came with blue lights but I'm probably gonna replace them with clear when I get around to wiring them up. As for the main bulbs, I used the Xenon Plasma bulbs.

The first H4 lights i had.. they were the best set i have ever seen... they shined beautifully... i cannot find what they were.. and can't find anything that shine like them, anywhere... I got the lenses and lights for 50 bucks on ebay...

i put relays in earlier this year and man what an improvement

how do you do the relays for the headlights?
I completely rewired my headlights through relay's with 14 guage wire after installing the H-4's. I also installed a waterproof fusebox under the hood that all my accessories now run through. If you need to know how to wire a relay, there's plenty of info and diagrams on the web. Just search "relay" or "relay wiring diagram".

i suggest upgrading to the heavy duty sockets if you intend on doing this as well...

Re: RE: Re: RE: Question about Spanish radio

Hi,

Keep in mind that the relays themselves are not what's making the lights brighter. The lights are brighter with the relays installed because you are significantly decreasing the length of wire between the battery and the light sockets (you no longer go all the way to the headlamp switch and back).

This means there is less wiring and connectors for the current to go through before it gets to the lights. Wiring and especially the connectors all create some resistance, which results in some voltage drop between the power source and its destination. So, less voltage drop equals brighter lights

yeah.. the headlights are getting a much more direct power source... you get better efficiency on any device by keeping the device closer to the power source... i love relays... its something very simple that a lot of people skip around, causing a lot of problems

93 XJ PCM Pin Connector Diagram?

I kept all my relay's inside the jeep under the dash so I don't think I cut back in the length of wiring by much. I used a heavier guage wire to compensate.
