Frame Protection

Well, I am diving in... I bought a "new" frame for my CJ so I can do a build up on it. My existing frame is pretty much garbage. The replacement is an 83(?) from out west where they didn't use salt, so there is no rust on the thing. I want to protect it so this frame lasts until I die. I am thinking of coating it in POR 15, but I have heard of another kind called Eastwood. Any advice on selecting those two? Also, how the heck do I protect it from rotting inside to out, like my current one did? How do I effectively shoot this paint in the frame rails and be sure I get it all? Is there some kind of long neck nozzle I can get somewhere?

Thanks guys. I am excited to get this thing in pristine condition so I can start swapping parts over this fall, once the top down season is over. I am sure I can figure this out on my own, but I know there are those of you who have done this before, so why not just ask.

Eastwood makes the Rust Encapsulator, but I know nothing about it. There is a comparison of it with POR15 at the Eastwood website HERE.

I'd recommend the POR15, or maybe check out Hammerite since you're starting with a rust-free frame.

I don't know if this will work or not, but try to find a sprayer tip for something like either a pressure washer or a weed and bug sprayer...any tip that will aerate the fluid. Attach that to the end of a long piece of air hose, with a shut off well back from the tip. Attach that to your liquid reservoir on your paint sprayer, stuff it as far into the frame as you can, turn on the valve and pull it back out of the frame as slowly as you can....you'll probably go through a lot more spray than necessary, but it should coat the inside of the frame rails pretty well, I'd think. I've never tried it, don't really know what a CJ frame looks like, so I just popped that all off the top of my head. Is it any good, or not?

Go to your local auto paint supplier and ask for a 3M catalog. you should find a product in there that is for spraying inside of frame rails. it is a waxy type of stuff that "migrates" to coat the entire inside of tha frame. make sure that you paint the outside first because paint will not stick to this stuff. I am a body man in florida and this is the stuff that we use after we repair bent frames. I have already treated my 04 ruby with it because I plan on keeping it for a long time also.

Cool, thanks for the tips guys. I will probably be getting to this in the next couple months.

POR-15 says that you need to paint over the Rust cover product so prepare to paint the POR-15 afterwards. Since you have it completely apart, why not POR-15 it then use a Flat textured paint over that then have it Line-Xed.
