Fog Light Mounting Opinions

Okies, I just got a set of El Cheapo" (Denji, I think) fog lights, the amber style. They are round, about the standard size of Hellas and KC's, only a bit thinner front to back. Anywho, I've been toying with the idea of mounting them on the front fenders, just back of where they start to curve down (and a little out and in front of the hood latches). I originally had planned to put them on the bumper, but have a few issues with that. The inside position that would put them in the middle of the bumper on either side of my "S" insignia would be a pain in the Sparky, errr, ummm, arse, because of the way the stock bumper is made with that pipelike bar that runs from frame rail to frame rail. Unless I drilled and tapped the holes to use threaded bolts, I have no way to secure a nut to the bottom without a lot of hassle. The other option was to place them near the ends of the bumpers, but I don't care for that because they would be just to the inside of the tires, and a prime target for mud, rocks, and all other kinds of road debris being thrown forward through the gap between the bumper and fender. I don't really want them on the windshield hinges or the hood hinges, either, I just don't really like that set up, and I don't have anymore tabs on my lightbar (and I can't weld, so adding more is out). Hence the fender idea. I'll post pics tomorrow or Monday, so in the meantime, what do you all think?

On your fenders!?! Are you out of your mind? No scratch that you are!
I would put then on the inside of your driving lights on the bumper. or you could run down to home de-pot and steal some no no just buy some 1/4 aluminum from there and make some brackets the use your winch mount holes to hold your lights.

I gots tow hooks in dem holes. Stealing would be wrong.urple: Why not the fenders (aside from the obvious that they will be targets for tree limbs, birds, and pedestrians?

Sorta, but not really. My thoughts there would be that the mounting bracket would give, allowing the light to fold back if it struck an object. However, after chatting with Utah last night, it dawned on me that my fender would probably give and fold back before the light. So, now I've changed my opinion, and am thinking more along the lines of the middle of the bumper.

I'd say go with the bumper mount inside the parking lights.

Well, after much thought and a second look at the bumper, I decided to mount them there. It wasn't as hard as it looked the first time, I just had to take off the plastic frame cover to get to the bolts so I could put the nuts and washers on. Didn't take long at all.

I drilled a small hole in the plastic cover just behind the lights and just big enough to thread the wire through, then ran the wire along the frame and up through the firewall. I still haven't put the switch in, still deciding on where to mount it. It came with a relay to hook into the headlights, but I don't know if I'll have it hooked to the headlights or not yet. I may run it as a combination where I can turn them on without the headlights, have them come on with the headlights, have them come on only with the brights, or only with the dims. Most likely only with the dims if I go that way, as they are fog lights and I'll probably only use them in the fog, and we all know not to run high beams in the fog....well, almost all of us.

i was wondering the same thing as TC, you don't pull off those tow hooks sideways do you? i'm giving you the benefit of the doubt assuming that they might be sideways cause you swung them to put the fogs in, but they have two bolt holes for a reason, gives them the strength that they're rated for.

I mounted mine on the windshield and the glare from the hood sucks! I can't bring myself to buy those dorky looking KC shields to keep that from happening.

What's the deal with those tow hooks?

Wondered when someone was gonna notice that!!:lol: I had to take them loose to get the frame cover off, so I pulled the rear bolt and swung them to the side like that. They're now back in their original position with both bolts holding them in place again.8)

I just mounted a set of the PIAA 940 dual beam (fog/driving) lights in the same location on my YJ 2 weeks ago. They work great.

Finally had the time to wire in my fog lights today. I wired them switched, so that they will either come on with the low beams, or so I can turn them on manually with or without the headlights. They can also be shut off so they won't come on with the low beams.

I had to go to town yesterday to buy another switch because the one that came with the wiring kit was in several pieces when I opened the package. I got one with a really bright blue LED on the end of it....it's sooooo pretty!:lol: On the way to town, I burnt out a headlight, so I upgraded to Sylvania Bright White (or something like that) Halogens. Man, those dudes are BRIGHT!! I didn't realize how pathetic my stock headlights were till I put those in. Rather pricey, but worth it, IMO.

I could get a tan standing in front of my Jeep now! I'm betting I'll be getting a higher power alternator soon, though.:-| But, in the meantime, I'll have an edge in seeing any deer or other wildlife that wanders into my path at night now!8)
