Dana 44 swap

The front axle will not work, the scout differential is on the opposite side than your stock axle.

Otherwise they're pretty easy to install. The wheel lug pattern is different also.

If you want some good d44 axles that are relatively easy to install, look for a front d44 from an '80s Grand Wagoneer (SJ) and a rear d44 from a mid '90s Isuzu Rodeo or Honda Passport. These axles have a matching 6-lug wheel pattern, wheels are very common, and it gives you 4whl disc brakes.

just to add, If you already have the axles, it can be done. you will need to swap in a D300 T case and move your exhaust. also you'll need to cut and rotate the inner castings on teh axle to correct the 0 caster. if it is a trail only rig, I wouldn't worry about the caster at all

Just swap in the rear Axle I just did it on a buddys YJ.

1 Cut off spring pads
2 get 2 1/2" new spring pads
3 get new Ubolts,shock mounts
4 set it up in the Jeep
5 use a magnetic degree finder
6 check for binding
7 tack weld spring pads and New shock mounts
8 remove axle arch weld a little at a time
9 re-install axle.
10 Not so bad.

The scout 44 is a little bit narrower than your stock axle as well but you can get wheel adapters to change it to your bolt pattern and with those the width should be about right. I put one in an XJ and it worked out great.

Saw my Buddy today with the YJ (Scout Dana 44 rear) He loves it went from a Dana 35 rear with 3:07's to a Scout Dana 44 with 4:10's. Right now he is running CJ/Ford rims in the back 5 on 5 1/2 and a 10" rim. We have to match the front end should swap in soon.

Here is the project YJ.He told me they had it out on the highway no vibs. So I guess I did a good job.
Note: I'm a welder ,I have a Stick welder and a small mig To handle the big and small jobs.
