Clutch or Transmission?

tell me what you think..
I am having problems shifiting into first & second gear while sitting still..ie stop sign etc.. If I have it in gear while stopped I have no problem shifting, or if I am in motion. If I start the jeep with clutch in, and in 1st gear I can move through all the gears fine, but if I put it in neutral let off the clutch, then push it back in I cant shift into any gear until I turn the engine off . I am assuming its the clutch.

Could be the clutch or bad synchronizers. What transmission fluid are you runnin?

Any other clutch/transmission noise or pedal problems?

I just changed the fluid Thursday, 75 90 GL-5 Coastal. Thoulght maybe that would help but no change. I havent noticed any noise or problems in the pedal, my dad and I bled the clutch yesterday, didnt help. I saw in one of the forums it was suggested to use Syncromesh or MT 90, think this will help?

Yes, get the GL5 out asap as it's high sulfer content is very corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers of your transmission. Do it right and put in Redline MT90, its the best for the synchros and being a full synthetic it greatly improves shifting even in cold weather.

Just a reminder, DO NOT USE GL5 GEAR OIL IN THE AISIN-WARNER AX5 AND AX15 TRANSMISSIONS! Spread the word, maybe save your fellow jeeper a transmission.

Bounty's right. I know your owner's manual and even Chilton & Haynes manuals say use GL5, but they are wrong. If you go to a dealer they use GL3 (Good luck finding that in a store), but now that you are starting to have problems, you're best bet is to go with the synthetic he listed above.

Every couple of months or so we read of another GL5 victim on this forum. DC should have owned up to this mistake.

You'll need to check Performace shops, not the chain parts-stores.

I wouldn't use gear oil in the transfer case, it calls for ATF.

What kind of transmission comes in the new TJs? I searched all my paperwork and couldn't find anything. And as for what type of fluid to use, the manual just says to use "Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant or Equivalent". What the heck is that?

Sorry for the mistake. I was still speaking of your transmission. ATF for t-case.
