Re: Its my b-day today

I'm in the process of installing a 2.5, from another jeep, in my 97 TJ. The problem I am having is when you tighten the bellhousing to the block the engine develops a squeeling sound, somewhere in the clutch area. I have replaced the throwout bearing, pilot bearing, removed and realigned the clutch. If you loosen the bellhousing bolts the squeel stops. Please Help!

Could be a bad bearing on the transmission input? Or a bent transmission input shaft? Double check to see that the pilot bearing and clutch are the correct parts for your jeep.

There is misalignment somewhere, hard part is tracking it down?

yes...it is crutial to have the right pilot bearing... if the new motor has a larger diameter bearing than the old one.. that could be your squeal... if this is the case, you might be in my boat... when i replaced my transmission... the old one had a wider input than the new one... nowhere around had the pilot i needed with the right outside and inside diameter... I ended up paying $20 at a machine shop to have a piece of bronze machined, its no bearing, actually a bushing, but it works just as well.. many motor companies still use bushings rather than bearings

The transmission imput shaft turns freely, with no noticeable wobble. As for the pilot bearing, I slid it on the imput shaft before installing it , and it seemed to be the correct one. The clutch is the one out of my old engine.

 After 5 days of being totally confused by the squeeling sound coming from the bellhousing of my 97 TJ, I finally located the source. The crankshaft position sensor was touching the flywheel. I don't know how this happened but after replacing most of the parts in the bellhousing I was glad to find the thorn that had been in my side for the last week.
