'80 CJ-7, a few questions

Hello, I have a 1980 CJ-7 and am trying to restore it. There are a few problems that I need help with:

1) It diesels extremely bad. Sometimes, if I let it idle for a bit before turning it off, I can get out of the car, open the hood, and watch my poor Jeep finally come rumbling to a jerky stop. I cleaned the carb idle jets with some cleaner, haven't filed them, but I was just wondering if there was another smaller repair I could try first.

2) What's the red line on this thing? Its got the straight 6-258 4.2L engine and I think its around 3000. Just double checking.

3) It irks me so bad not having a radio, I always have to have some tunes playing while I'm in my car. Unfortunately, mine doesn't work and I'm afraid it's beyond repair. Since I'm restoring it, I was wondering if anybody might know where I could get a replacement radio.

RE: Fuel system...

1.Check your timming
2. 4500 According to my factory tach
3. Go to a place that offers lifetime warranty on the wirring. Circuit City / Best buy MayBE ?
Just about anyplace will sell you a new Radio.
Or did you want a OEM replacement ?

I am not sure if you have the same thing as I do, but I'll let you know what I have done so far. I have an 86, just picked it up. Dieseled real bad, put premium in it and it stopped. Went back to regular and it started up again. Mine idles too high, I don't know the rpm's, but by listening I can tell, anyway there is a plug on the firewall side of the carb. It goes to a brain that controls air flow. I live in a state that doesnt do emissions test, so I unplugged it while running and after warmup. It still idles high, but the dieseling has stopped. I dont know if the 80 series had this or not, but I have read about a lot of people unplugging this brain. Good luck, and keep up posted. Are you keeping the same paint scheme? If so which is it? Rich

I think that if you have a lot of carbon buildup on the valves and such it can cause dieseling problems. Im not exactly sure how to fix this yourself, as I hesitate to suggest what Ive always heard of people doing. Maybe someone else will jump in.

Ya, I love the paint scheme as it is. It's the blue renegade one. It's kinda a sky blue with different shades of blue for the stripes. I'd like to get it repainted, but thats quite an expensive step, sooo, I'm gonna have to wait on that one. I'm gonna try and get a digital pic into my signature today. I'll try the premium fuel for a week, and also taking out that plug. Thanks guys. Nathan, what is this process you're afraid to suggest?

Are you referring to pouring water down the carb/throttle body while the engine is running?

RE: sony radio cj7

Oh, I've tried pouring water down the carb, but that was a long time ago. Maybe I should try it again, unless it's not good to do?

Oh, and, there is my Jeep. Just put it into my profile.

RE: last touchup to the ranks

I see where one would be hesitant to suggest pouring water into the carb...It doesn't take much to ruin an engine. Maybe fuel injector cleaner would help? Some of those are advertised as cleaning the valves.

Can't help ya with the trouble, but I want to say that's a nice lookin' CJ. I hate to see those factory striping schemes get yanked - there just... so distinctly... Jeep.

Have you taken White's suggestion and checked the timing? That's the first place to look when you experience dieseling.

RE: Gone for a while...

Ya, I'm trying to get my hands on a timing light right now. Maybe next weekend. Thanks for the compliment Twisted. I agree about the stripes. They are pretty slick.

But, ya, it's kinda an "approximate restoration." Today, I put in a fold-and-tumble rear seat, which is beautiful. I also plan to do a shackle lift sometime in the very near future, as soon as I get new leaf springs. Just raise it up another inch.
