5.38 gears

yes, but you need a 4.10 and up carrier. many older D25's, 27's, and 30's from 46-71 had 5.38 gears stock

im not doubting you but are you positive cause i have this question posted on other forums and i keep getting mixed answers. I'm not doubting your knowledge please dont take it like that, I just want to be sure befor I order a new carrier and gears. Somebody on jeepforum said that there isnt enough room in a dana 30 for 5.38's. I'm just really confused.

From my limited web research it looks like the 5.38 will fit early D30's but not late-model d30's. Call a retailer like Complete Offroad and get the facts straight, you'll likely never get a straight answer on a forum.

8)Your right I will probably do that tomorrow, Thanks for all of yalls help though. what would i do without you guys!!!!8)

Your question does not say anything about year make or model, only asks if 5.38's will fit a stock carrier.. Yes, jeep produced thousands of vehicles with a Dana 25, 27, and DANA 30 from 1946-1971 with 5.38 gears from the factory.. so yes, 5.38 gears will fit a stock, factory supplied carrier per YOUR question. If this is not the information you desire I appologize, but you might want to re-evaluate your question.

this is accurate, the pinion bearings seats are different and I believe that the reverse rotation versus standard rotation also had influence (but not piositive on this as 72-on D30's were both LP and HP).

If I upset you im sorry i didnt mean to offend you, I just wanted to make sure. But ive decided to just go with 4.88's.

I am by no means upset, I was trying to illustrate that the reason why you are getting conflicted answers is that the question is to open.

Also unless you have a D44 or larger ring gear rear axle, 4.88 is as deep as you can go. D35 can not accept a (numerically) larger gear.

Well the reason i was asking about the 5.38's is because I am rebiulding a Ford 9" and it already had 5.38's so i was just gonaa regear the front, but the front cant hold 5.38's so I am just gonna have to regear both. I am glad you gave me the information I needed because I was about to order the gears, I didnt realize the dana 30 was different on the jk and TJ's I appreciate it you saved me a lot of trouble and money.:-)

before you buy gears, I think you should still call complete offroad or randy's ring and pinion and see what they say
