    starter relay

I pulled the 3 prong connector that connects to the fuel pump...and checked for 12 volts. It hits 12 volts for about 2 seconds and then Zero. I tried the XJnick idea of bypassing the ceramic resistor on the engine wall. Still dropped back to zero. I believe I was hearing a click under the dash...

    starter relay

ok, here's what I'm thinking....something has stopped the fuel pump from spinning inside the tank. The starter relay is pushing electricity to the pump and the pump is not rotating...hence the melted wire. My current answer is to drain the tank, drop the tank, remove the pump and see why its not...

    starter relay

Well, new starter relay ($72 at dealer) did not solve the problem... going to search the forum for fuel pump relay information...

    starter relay

The manual calls it a starter solenoid, the parts place calls it a starter relay. I think it looks like a relay. In any event, the jeep would not start the other day so I had it towed home. I tried starting it, and the red/black wire from the relay got so hot it melted the wire cover. My...

    fuel pressure problem?

Done :-) Big thanks to bounty hunter (bad fuel pump) and dropseys (had to drop the tank) for their diagnosis. You go guys! Notes to future fuel pump changers...check the bolts that hold the gas tank straps, you might need to replace them. I was unable to get the nuts loose, and I had to...

    fuel pressure problem?

Dropseys, I read in the manual where dropping the tank ended with the 1988 model. I looked under the car and it sure appeared to be a straight remove and replace. By the way, on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being stinking dangerous, how tough is this repair? Also the parts guy at pep boys asked...

    fuel pressure problem?

Thanks Bounty Hunter...I needed a definitive answer. Now, the next question is... do I need to drain the fuel tank? I know to disconnect the battery and avoid metal tools that spark...but empty the gas tank? Thanks again for your help.

    fuel pressure problem?

I did the bleed down test...as soon as I shut off the engine it bleeds to zero. No waiting 30 minutes to watch it drop 20 PSI...right to zero...whew!

    fuel pressure problem?

I have an 89 cherokee with a 4.0 engine. I read several threads in the forum about fuel pressure and regulators. Here's my problem...the jeep would start and idle, but stall as soon as the gas pedal was touched. I hooked up the pressure gage to the connection and it read 28 PSI with the...

    shrader valve stem?

I purchased some tire schrader valves at Pep Boys (I needed the valve core tool) and they had a red ring (seal). I purchased 2 AC schrader valves at a parts store and they had a black ring. I would expect that is how you tell the difference...red for tires and black for AC.

    shrader valve stem?

In case anyone else runs into this problem...schrader valves cost a little under $2. If they're missing, your AC charge will leak out. I still haven't figured out where mine went...and when? But apparently my auto parts place sells a bunch of them.

    shrader valve stem?

    shrader valve stem?

I read the forum theads about changing over to R134a in my cherokee (89). I purchased the R134a quick connects. When I was getting ready to thread them on I noticed I did not have valve stems in either schrader valve from my R12 fittings. Is this normal? I woudl expect that my R134a will not...

    cherokee brakes

Talk about your "a-hah" moments...thank you bounty hunter (and everyone else who contributed to the troubleshooting). I read bounty hunter's reply and I thought...wait a minute the bleeder valve is low. Sure enough the calipers were on the wrong sides, and switching them solved the problem...

    cherokee brakes

Here's where I am today...new caliper front left and right, new brake hoses front left and right. to go with new booster and new master cylinder. Re-bleed all brakes and ...pedal goes to the floor. No obvious leaks of fluid. In fact, no reduction in fluid in master cylinder (except when I'm...

    cherokee brakes

Ok, I bench bled the master cylinder (tight as a tourniquet) and when I was reconnecting the lines I noticed the rear brake lines kept the pedal tight. When I reconnected the front brake line...pedal went to floor. I removed both wheels and checked the lines and calipers ( I had just replaced...

    cherokee brakes

So the brake pedal on my '89 cherokee goes close to the floor before stopping the jeep. So I read the forums and I replace the master cylinder. I go to bleed the brakes. I notice the bleed valve has been sheered off, so I replace the caliper. New master cylinder, new caliper, new fluid. I bleed...

    transmission cooler lines

Gently squeeze on the 2 plastic tabs and pull. The coupling separates....hence the term "quick connects". Since 1989 they have changed the line fitting from the radiator. I had to remove the origianl plastic quick connect and the line now fits directly into the longer transmission line. I...

    transmission cooler lines

I'm trying to replace the transmission cooler line on my cherokee laredo. I removed the entire line to get a better look at the quick connect. I see the 2 plastic tabs...now what? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    shredded serpentine belt

Purchased a new pulley (around $12 at NAPA) and a new transmission cooler hose (around $26 at NAPA) and a new serpentine belt. If all goes well the jeep should be up and running tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
