Had the same problem with my 79 CJ5. Switched to points distributor. Never had another problem. Also allowed me to trail brake the motor down to very low RPM when on dirt.

All i've seen are on the right with the plate on the left. Mount your plate over the filler cap. Mount it on a hinge with a spring. That should confuse everyone. What side is your steering wheel on? What country are you in?
