    1956 CJ5 Build

I finished the rear suspension and attached it to the frame and Dana 44. Unfortunately I ordered the wrong shackle so I will install them once the appropriate part arrives. I also began cleaning and disassembling the hurricane 4 for paint and rebuild. The front end is painted and I will install...

    1956 CJ5 Build

I began disassembling the leaf springs and cleaning them. Once cleaned, I applied the base coat of POR-15. So far I got one set painted. It looks pretty good. Also I applied the base coat onto the Dana 44.

Here is my frame after two coats of POR-15 and two coats of POR-15's Chassis coat black top coat. I am now working on disassembling the Dana 44 rear so I can paint it with the same stuff and replace all the old gaskets and seals.

    1956 CJ5 Build

After two weeks at the sand blast shop, I finally got the frame back. It looks really good! I applied two coats of POR-15 (pictures to follow). Once all the rust was removed I uncovered the original serial number from the frame (101295). This tells me the frame is from 1955 if it's a true CJ5...

    1956 CJ5 Build

Sounds good John. Thanks for all the tips you've provided thus far. It's my first total restoration so there will be some things I am clueless on. My frame is loaded into my truck and will be dropped off for sand blasting tomorrow. I've got POR-15 waiting in the garage.

    Dana 44 Issues

Oh ok that makes sense. I don't understand why the axle would be made that way. Having power to both wheels sounds like a no brainer.

    Dana 44 Issues

I am rebuilding my '56 CJ5 and have ancountered a problem with my Dana 44 rear axle. When I spin the Pinion Shaft Yoke at the differential, only the left wheel spins. The right wheel moves very slightly but nowhere near as much as the left. When I opened up the differential cover and moved the...

    1956 CJ5 Build

I love the 3B. You did a great job on it! What kind of paint did you use on the frame? I made a little progress yesterday but am officially complete with the disassembly process. I removed the front and rear bumpers that were in terrible shape. Willys used rivets back in the 50's to attached...

    1956 CJ5 Build

I have been taking pictures every step of the way and putting all parts in labeled zip lock bags so I remember where they go. I also have the original parts catalog and service manual. They have pretty good diagrams and instructions so hopefully that will facilitate the reassembly. In regards to...

    1956 CJ5 Build

"54CJ3B" , thanks for all your help! The below pictures show my success today. The transmission slipped right off the engine with the help of a crow bar. I didn't even need to remove the transfer case from the transmission. While separating the transmission from the transfer case, all the gears...

    1956 CJ5 Build

Ok so if they can come off as one unit I have no idea why they will not pull free of the engine. Every nut and bolt has been removed. Very frustrating :(

    1956 CJ5 Build

54CJ3B, is the nut in the diagram you provided required to remove to get the transmission clear of the engine?

    1956 CJ5 Build

So today I removed the engine, axles, suspension and am now down to the bare frame. I'm having extreme difficulty removing the transmission from the engine. I've followed the steps in the service manual but it is still hung up on something. Then transmission rotates freely at the bell housing...

    1956 CJ5 Build

"54 CJ3B", I attempted to remove that bolt holding the transfer case to the transmission but it rotates freely. Also, any ideas on how to remove the transmission from the bell housing of the engine? The original service manual tells me to "push the transmission to the right to dislodge the...
