Its the stock ax5 in there now.

Im pretty sure my transmission is on its last legs. Havent really had the chance to dive into it, just an educated guess at this point in time. My question is if I want ot upgrade to the ax15 what will be needed? will the bell housing and the transfer case match up or will they need to be changed.

the tabs where the back bow is supposed to lock into the front piece are broken off so you have to keep it up with bungee cords, and the drivers side is missing the bar that goes to the windshield. When the jeep came to me there was no top with it so I just assumed that it was o.e style...

as it turns out the hardware is not only broken, its the wrong style for the top as stated in previous posts, so I guess I'll look for some new hardware sooner than later.

When I got mine it had 35x15x15 super swampers on it mounted on 15x12 in wheels. I dont believe it was regeared because it would seem like it was wound out at about 50mph

Unless you have the time and the ability to have a vehicle laid up for repairs I wouldn't bother. Why give up a running vehicle for something that quite possibly is going to need more work than you know about.

If one can't install a 4.0 without hacking it up I would venture to say their install of a v8 would be equally hacked. Just my opinion

It can be done with the time and effort...yes it is as much work as it would be to put in a v8 but the 4.0 was engineered for these vehicles. If and when something breaks you will save yourself time and aggrevation being able to walk into the parts store and get something right off the shelf...
