    Coil Spacer Question...

I have a 1 inch body lift and a 2 inch coil spacer lift. I like the ride height and it gives my 31's plenty of space. The rule of thumb on body lifts is no more than 1 inch (puts too much stress on the mounts). Both of my kits came from Terra-Flex and seem to be well made. Installation was...

    Snow is taking its toll

You four wheel drive problem could be a quick fix... Check out the vacuum lines on the front axle. Going through deep snow (or snowbanks) might have pulled off a line. With that much snow we really have proof of global warming now  Best of luck - John

    question about moving my mirrors

When my TJ was still fairly new I removed most of these bolts, greased them with marine grade grease, and reinstalled them. Even back then a couple of them had a little rust in the threads. They were all very hard to get out - each one broke loose with a bone jarring SNAP!! A couple of them...

    Vibration Problem

Check your emergency brake cables and make sure they are not sticking. Often if the e-brake is dragging you'll get shudder once it heats up. One side might be the culprit or you might find the center cable sticking. Best of luck - John

    TJ steering box interchangeability?

Yes, there is what appears to be a Mercedes symbol on my steering box (05 TJ) and is IS "funky". It does appear to be well built, though... There is a top cover (around the input shaft) which is bolted on with a circle of little bolts instead of the big lock nut. Also the end of the box does...

    Help me ID this leak

Mikey's directions are good - I've done it this way before. I'll just add that when you tap out the upper half be sure to use something that will not scratch the crankshaft. I was able to get it started with a small dowell (wood) and then pull it the rest of the way out with pliers. Best of...

    funny sounds in the engine

Are the new plugs the right heat range? Trying a tank of high test gas might still be worth it for troubleshooting. That does sound like pinging to me. Mine makes the "slow blender ping" too. Pulling up a big hill mine will make a ping or two every half second or so. I back off the gas...

Will lack of speedo gear harm anything?

If the noise came with the new gear you might not have the mesh right. Did you turn the speedo gear housing to line up with the correct number of teeth? - John

    have I got this right?

I have 31's on my 05 TJ with the six speed and 3.07 gears. I find it drives fine most of the time. Reverse is a little too steep in high range off road (No big deal - I just drop it into 4 low if I'm jockeying around much) . Hill starts in first need just a tad bit of clutch slippage to...

    funny sounds in the engine

Does it sound like "marbles in a blender" ? It might be pinging (spark knock) . Try filling up with mid grade or premium gas and see if it gets better. How many mile are on your spark plugs? When mine are worn (over 20K miles) I get bad pinging. Best of luck - John

Is the airbag computer (ACM) waterproof?

Thanks for the reply, Mikey... I guess I should be more careful with the hose. I might consider greasing the connector someday... - John

Is the airbag computer (ACM) waterproof?

Does anyone know how well protected the airbag computer is? I've hosed mine a few times but started being more careful after reading about airbag horror stories. Has anyone submarined theirs? Does anyone else hose out their TJ and spray the computer? It's prime hose-out-the-Jeep weather (get...

My dream... help me with visuals

Unfortunately, here in Mass, gun racks are frowned upon. The most you're supposed to carry on them is a level. I don't know why I continue to stay here. Now ( since 1998 ) we're not supposed to transport any guns unless they are in a locked metal container (or have trigger locks). :evil...

    TJ front coils

With the ole' Cummins in there your winch weight would become trivial, I would think... Unless your winch is from an M35  . You're going to have an awsome Jeep when you're done. Please keep us posted. Best of luck - John

    towing capacity

Yes... It's not because of pulling ability - it's because of control and braking. The short wheelbase makes for a pretty squirrly ride. :bomb: -John

Tell me what to look for!!!

That's not true... The 35 makes a nice redneck mailbox post as well ;) Back in "the day" we used to look for a Ford 9 inch axle out of a Mustang or Comet to replace the AMC 20. They were a little wider and pretty strong. These had a one piece welded up housing (no pressed together center...

    painting wheel flares

Not sure about the aftermarket ones. I checked out one wide aftermarket set that were a harder plastic (not too flexible) and figured they'd break on the trail. Those might have been paintable with a plastic paint. I liked my flexible black stock flairs better - they flex and bend and snap...

    painting wheel flares

Are the factory painted flairs fiberglass? They seem to be harder than the black ones (I have black ones) ? The black ones look and feel like they might be polyethylene. If so, nothing will stick to them very well for long. - John

    Towing help needed

OK... so that's how they got around all of the "anti-toad" laws - just make something that pushes on the brake pedal. I was going to try to install a remote vacuum over hydraulic unit to activate the brakes but I never did. I bet that thing even has a breakaway sensor in case the hitch fails...
