    Steering box trouble

On my 05 it's not a Saginaw box. Mine looks like a Mercedes box. Getting parts for it has been a worry in the back of my mind since day one. -John

Preventing rear end squatting on 2006 Wrangler Unlimited

What is your tongue weight? Wranglers have a pretty low tongue weight limit (like around 200 pounds) . -John

    Which axle is this?

The grand has an upper control "triangle" in the center of the axle housing instead of upper control arms... The E brake on my Mom's grand (which uses cute little shoes on the inside of the disk) has been something of a headache and does NOT work as well as the drum rear in my Wrangler. -John

1/4" of race play in D44 - Fix?

When I was a kid my Dodge Coronet spun an axle race and wore the housing so that the new bearing was now a loose sliding fit in the housing end. Following the advise of an old time mechanic, I took a prick punch and carefully made a whole bunch of little punch marks in a grid pattern all the...

    MPG any thoughts?

I have had pinging problems with my 05 for quite a while. I really think these stock plugs stick too far into the fire and retain a glow under certain conditions. I tried a set of "stubby" Bosch four prong plugs which ran pretty well but I don't like the gap on them (too big and can not be...

I probably have the switch operation backward... sorry, it's been a while since my CJ7... Good photo of the location... -John

    FLASHERS.... HAVE or HAVE NOT?

The switch should be a fragile, plastic, hollow cube sticking out near the ignition switch (like at 4:00 on the column). Pull to turn on - push to turn off. If it's not there I would say it broke off or someone changed the column. -John

    Check Engine code P1281

At some point Chrysler switched to "HOAT" antifreeze which is an orangy-red color. "They" say NOT to switch to any other type of antifreeze. My 2005 has "HOAT" - maybe 2003 was "HOAT" too and that's why it looks rusty. Mikey may chime in and tell us when the change was instituted. - John I...

    jeep jumping gears while stopped?

If the engine is turning over allowing the Jeep to roll that's probably OK (might be an indication of low compression) . Put the transmission in 1st or reverse (depending on which way the Jeep is facing so the engine is turning the right way. In a pinch you can put the transfer case in 4 LO...

    Front End Popping Issue

The control arm bushings are a fixed core, flexible rubber joint. They should not be greased in any way. You CAN grease the bolts during assembly so they don't rust in place. I had a loud cracking or popping sound when flexing off road or turning real tight on road. It was hard to find but...

    oil pump problem

I can't remember how the AMC V8 pickup goes on... It's been too many years. Some pickups use a flange with two bolts and a gasket. Some are pressed in place and have a bracket with a bolt. Some are "one use only" - they tell you to change the pickup during a rebuild (press fit). Is it...

    Jeep doors help?????

What Terry found on Ebay seems to be a good deal for today's prices... The ones I used were for one of those tall metal two door office cabinets. I think they came from the local locksmith shop and were like 12 or 15 dollars each (but that was like more than 20 years ago) . Bring in an old...

    Jeep doors help?????

My 78 got those stress cracks too... Yes, the striker area is just a little flat plate on the door jamb. I never thought about it that way... The rear of the door has no support at all - I wonder if the later style lock pin actually dose give it some support? If you keep the old style...

    oil pump problem

I thought on those AMC V8s the oil pump was in the bottom of the timing chain housing... Can you post a photo? Do you mean the oil pump pickup assy? -John

    new engine

That would be one sweet Jeep... And the power output would probably be a pretty good match to the axles (unlike a bigger diesel) . No idea how you're going to mate it up, though... Id start with a call to Advanced Adapters to see if it's remotely possible. You might push 30-35 MPG out of...

Sign of worn bearings or u-joint?

Yes, normal... And desireable... This means your rotors are not rust welded to the hubs. When the time comes to change them they'll come right off. It can get pretty ugly when they rust together into one fused unit. -John

    Rebuild question??

Those are Woodruff keys. To get the keys out: Tap with a brass hammer (or brass punch) straight down on the very end of the key. The opposite end will pop up and then you can get under it and roll the key out of the slot. The keys are round (curved) on the bottom. -John
