    Gas mileage in the CJ's

My 78 CJ7, 258, 3 spd std, 4-something gears, 29 inch tires, used to get around 12-15 MPG depending on what kind of driving I did. My 05 TJ (4.0, 6 spd std, 3.07 gears, 31 inch tires) gets 15-20 MPG. I guess all that fancy computer control equipment adds a little bit of mileage. Both Jeeps...

Stuff you've carried in your Jeep that made people look twice

50 inch plasma TV. Stood it on a foam pad and strapped in to the roll bars. Got a few weird looks along the way. Guy I got it from could not believe it fit in the Jeep. -John

Stuff you've carried in your Jeep that made people look twice

Jeep load of Bamboo. We stuffed the Jeep full of Bamboo plants and I drove back home (about 80 miles) . The root balls weighed around 500 pounds total. I tied them up some so I could see OK (this is before tying) but it still looked pretty funny. The farmer said, "you better watch it... The...

Stuff you've carried in your Jeep that made people look twice

Here's a 60 pound, three tier wedding cake. I had to deliver it about 35 miles. The bakery guy really thought it was a bad idea to put it in the Jeep. He thought it would be too rough. I assured him that I'd stay out of the woods on the way back. The cake made it with only one little stress...

Stuff you've carried in your Jeep that made people look twice

What things have you carried in or on your Jeep that made people look twice? Here's a 400 pound soapstone sink. I removed the tailgate (I miss the early Jeeps with the lift off gate! ) . I loaded and unloaded it alone using a come-along on the roll bar. -John

    Slant 6 in a CJ?

The easiest way to tell the 170 from the 225 is by looking at the thermostat bypass hose. If it's really short (like the nipples almost touch) it's the 170. The 225 had a little more space between them. If I recall, you can not change the hose on the 170 without removing the head - you can...

    Slant 6 in a CJ?

The 225 Slant should pull the Jeep pretty well, they had them in full size pickups. The 170 might be a little lacking, though. Johnny is right... It won't fit in a short nose Jeep but it might go into a CJ7 OK, you'll have to take the tape measure to it. The Slant is not a compact motor...

    Exhausting Struggle!!!!!!

When I first got my 05 brand-new I removed three of those bolts and put never-sieze on them so that years later I could service them. That fourth bolt I could not get out. I ended up with a little leak there (just a slight one) that I can hear if I get right down on top of it. I decided that...

    Clutch noise

Are you getting one click as you push the pedal (like it's something in the linkage, granted most of it is hydraulic) ? Or, are you getting a repeating, engine speed click as you hold the pedal down? One click could be as simple as the pedal pin or safety switch binding up a little. Does it...

    2' BB Lift

You're welcome... If I recall the bolts were about half what the dealer wanted. I did a 2 inch BB on my 05 TJ and had no problems with vibes or wobble. Best of luck - John

    help with towing...

Yes, a tow dolly would get you less wear on the Jeep AND brakes to make it legal. Here in Mass you can go up to 3000 pounds without brakes BUT, if you have more than one axle you need a break-away brake. -John

help i have a weird tapping or clicking when its in drive after a long drive

"when it ticks my oil preasure drops to allmost 0 " Not good. I'd put a mechinical oil gauge on it and see what's up. It does sould like an oil pressure problem, though. And you don't want to drive it like that. Best of luck - John

    help with towing...

Pulling both of the driveshafts is a good idea. Just be aware that in many (all by now??? ) states it is illegal to flat tow with no brakes on the "toad" . Since you're going across the country you might try to see which states are illegal. For this info you might search some RV forums or the...

    light circuit

Do your tail lights (running lights) work? If not, it could be the fuse (there should be a parking light fuse, marked "park" on the fuse block). I see that you checked the grounds at the lights... I would assume that you checked and have no power there at the sockets? Best of luck - John

    engine drop??

Congrats to getting your engine all back together  Did you center the clutch disk on the flywheel? If it's not centered the "teeth" won't line up. You can get a cheap plastic alignment tool for it or make one out of wood. It would require loosening all the pressure plate bolts (quarter...

    Help Identifying this Jeep

CJ5... Does it have a welded on cover in the top of the cowl in front of the passenger side of the windshield? If so, then it's an early one. Very nice Jeep, well worth fixing up. Best of luck - John

Premier Power VS High output alternator with inverter

With the welder you'll need to run the Jeep constantly. With the inverter you can run off a battery and use the Jeep to charge the battery up on a schedule (like every 6 hours, depending on battery size and loads) . If you plan on running heavy loads constantly then the welder is probably the...

    check gauges

While the volt meter is "flat" put a test meter across the battery and see if it is low too. Bring the idle up and see if the voltage goes up any. With the engine running put the lights on and see if the voltage is low. You should see more than 13 volts even with the lights on. If all is OK...

New Jeep owner..questions. Flares and Vinyl Windows

Congrats on getting your Jeep. You're in for a lot of fun. About the coil rail... Be very careful removing the coil rail. Remove the bolts and slowly wiggle and pull the rail upwards off the plugs. Be sure the plug boots are NOT stuck to the plugs. If they are stuck you need to carefully...
