    99 TJ 2.5 serpentine chirp

Chirping could be the water pump. I've seen many of them do this. With the engine off try to wiggle the waterpump shaft and see if there is any side play (should be very little) . Or pull off the belt and turn and feel the waterpump shaft to see if the bearing is dry. If it is the pump it...

Axles popping out of 4 wheel

I swear having the driveshaft turn all the time makes the U-joints last longer. When they sit idle they seem to rust up. I always ran my locking hubs (older Jeeps and trucks) "locked" to keep everything moving. Dad always ran his "unlocked" to save gas and his U-joints were forever rusting...

    cj5 to cj7

If the CJ5 is a 1976 or later you should be OK. From about 71 to 75 I'm pretty sure the frame is different, although those custom parts may still fit (76 is the first year of the CJ7 and the "new" CJ frame) The earlier short nose CJ5s (around 1970 and earlier) had much different frames. The...

    Can i fill my frame?

The expanding foam will trap salt and water inside the frame. RUS-FREE makes a really nice undercoating spray gun which will fit into the holes of the frame and spray rust preventative onto most of the inside of the frame. I wash out the inside of my frame several times each winter (along with...

it sounds like i have a turbo wound out when im in 4x4

Did you have it in low or high range? You would get some gear whine in low range at 40 Km/hr. Like the guys said, high range should be pretty quiet. -John PS "howles like a wound out turbo on a Cummins" - few things sound better than a Cummins hard at work - music to my ears :-)

    AMC 20 Brakes

Cool... You got it off... You might consider replacing the wheel cylinders as well. I have had a lot of bad luck reusing old wheel cylinders. The piston cups get pushed back over dirt or rust and start leaking a a couple weeks. You may luck out and not leak, though... I know of a couple of...

    AMC 20 Brakes

Be careful with the puller. You can easily wreck the drum. You can put some tension on it with the puller - just a little - you'll see the drum flex on the face around the hub. Then, with the tension on it, give the face a few raps near the hub like Mikey said. You're sure it's not hung up...

    Tire Chain Options??

I think I got them from tirechains.com online. They have a huge selection. If you give them your tire specs they should be able to set you up. You might need to do a little customizing - save the extra parts for making repairs later. Best of luck - John

    Tire Chain Options??

Dad always ran four chains on the old CJ5 and we got through everything in the winter (unless he high centered it - happened now and then) . You do get some slippage so they will be more forgiving on the axles. You can order them on line. The ones I got for my tractor came a little too big...

Driver side door not lining up

I don't know about the YJ but the TJ has plastic bushings in the hinges. Have a look at the other door and see if there are any bushings. The bushings are pretty delicate and are easily damaged or lost when removing the doors (the threaded part of the hinge can snag them) . I'm pretty sure I...

    TJ instrument cluster beeping

Phil, I bet that's what happened to mine... I thought it stopped at about 10 MPH but it could have been 15. That makes sense. It must have gotten a false input somehow and "thought" the turn signal was on. I may pull the cluster and clean (and maybe grease) the "famous" connector back there...

    TJ instrument cluster beeping

Hi everyone, Any one else ever have this happen??? I was driving along and my instrument cluster started beeping (same as it does for the parking brake) . No lights were on and the gauges all were reading OK. I kept going until I found a safe place to pull over and when the Jeep got down to...

    CJ7 starts on its own

Disconnect the small wires from the solenoid - the ones on the two small studs. They are probably push-on, right angle, rubber connectors (keep track of where they go). Solenoid is mounted to the inner fender and can be located by following the large positive battery cable. The cable goes...

    Sway bar disconnects = bad???

So, that skinny little sway bar in the rear (with the plastic ends) - that you can flex with your hand - actually IS important? I was thinking about taking it out but I guess I shouldn't (the ends are worn and clunking) . My front sway bar has been missing for over a year and I really don't...

What are the rare or desireable options in a cj?

My friend's 79 CJ7 (Renegade) had factory AC. That's the only one I've ever seen. It also had a 304, 4 speed, tilt wheel, dash pad, and courtesy lights. My 78 CJ7 was as plain as could be except for the 258. So riding in my buddy's Jeep was like riding in a Cadillac (well... OK... not...

Traded my cherokee for a cj5

"Couldn't afford a nice Jeep and I didn't want a payment." ALL Jeeps are nice Jeeps. Looks like you found a gem. I think it's really cool that there is still a place in this country where you can trade a shotgun for Jeep parts. That doesn't happen around here too often. Best of luck with...

    How rare are the 4speeds?

I doubt you're wrong at all... The brochure you have is probably older than the V8 \ 4spd combo. They changed things so often it's a wonder they could keep track of anything. All the examples I've seen are 79 or later. -John

    ignition help

This is true depending on how worn your ignition lock is. My brother's Cadillac key started my 78 CJ7 no problem. If the lock is still nice and tight a locksmith can make you a new key on the spot. Best of luck - John

    Strange metallic squawking from rear...

Check the lug nuts and the fit of your spare wheel to the hub. Loose lug nuts can make squawking sounds, squeeking sounds, clunking sounds... They usually stop making noise at some point :bomb: - and then really bad things happen... -John

    How rare are the 4speeds?

The four speed was available with the V8 too. My friends 79 Renegade with a 304 had one. First gear was really nice off road compared to my three speed. -John
