    viscous coupler

Is your rear end making any noise. When it "won't move" is it binding or slipping? Grinding, bucking and locking up or kind of jamming instead of slipping (viscous coupler) may indicate a ring gear (or pinion) problem. Might want to check out the IFSJ site, lot of old timers on there.

    1990 Jeep Cherokee

At the starter relay, it should have juice at the "I" pin (dark green wire) when the key is turned to start. It should have constant power to the B or Batt connection (large red qwire). the G pin (black with white stripe) should go to ground when the shifter is in park or neutral. You can...

    92 Cherokee Runs Hot

I've talked with guys using a 180 thermostat and things seem to be fine. Others have said their gas mileage drops after installing a 160, especially in the winter or cool evenings. I only use distilled water 50/50 mix (or whatever the owners manual recommends). Or test it with a coolant...

    radiator drain plug

Mine is on the passengers side down low. I never mess with it. I put a big pan under the drivers side and disconnect the lower radiator hose on the pump end (or the radiator end if you want to remove the air box). Then wash down the area, with a little clean water. Takes a pretty big catch...

96 grand cherokee limited PCM issue

There is a re learn procedure for a new PCM, you are likely going to need a FSM. I don't have the procedure for the grand. I'd clean the connectors up well. One thing to avoid is flashing the PCM by wiggling the battery terminals. Wiggling the battery terminals can result in a low charge...

    aftermarket fog lights....install

The wife lost hers around forty years ago, lost enough meat out of her right leg to make a roast. She has pretty much kept two households going, ours and her elderly parents for a decade and still works half days and managed to raise three kids. My guess is it is mostly about will power.

    aftermarket fog lights....install

I went out and looked at mine, there doesn't seem to be any easy way to do it, that I can think of. A socket extension with a universal joint would likely flop around and make it nearly impossible. In your position I'd remove the light from the base, cut me a wood dowel to around a foot long...

    Roll Cages

It's all a compromise between weight and protection is my guess. Many of the full body cages also double as frame stiffeners. They are as much for strengthening the frame as they are for protection. My personal opinion gained through experience (my wife rolled an XJ) and observation...

loosing power and stalling with big backfiring

I'd hate to send you down the wrong path, but if the sensors seem OK. It may be time to check some of the basics. Are you loosing any coolant? Do you periodically have to add a little though there are no leaks that you know of? May want to look at the plugs, the color can tell a tale...

    Shaking at high speeds

Just for the heck of it, check the front U Joints. Had one XJ that picked up a vibration right around 80 MPH. Most of the vibration was the U-joint and a couple marginal tie rod ends seemed to magnify the vibrations. almost to the point of shimmy. The way I check front U-Joints is to jack...

loosing power and stalling with big backfiring

Doubtful it's the valve timing. I'd say either a fuel problem or sensor problem. When they run way lean they will stall or buck and backfire. Various sensor or wiring problems can cause this. Instead of playing musical parts it my be a better idea just to pay the money and get a scan...

    confused about oil filter brackets

My 88 and my 96 have different filters. One is metric and the other SAE and slightly different shank/thread diameters.

    Hvac

Thanks for steering me in the right direction. Guess when I get a chance I'll pull off the passengers side kick panel and see if I can spot the leak. Doubtful I'm going to disassemble the HVAC housing. I've got a whole laundry list of other stuff to do, like ball joints and wheel cylinders...

Wife complaining about the smell from the A/C in her 96 XJ.. I found the drain for the evaporator and made sure it was open, then funneled some water into the drain pan and let it run out a few times. Then let some anti-mold bathroom cleaner run into the pan. Vacuumed then blew out (with air)...

    Bad window tint

As an old school refrigeration guy, I'll tell you straight, ammonia is some nasty stuff, even a gas mask won't help. I herd somebody actually makes a remover fluid for this. Said they found it at Wal Mart. Let us know how things turn out. I have to do my rer window, I've been affraid of...

    Cherokee Auto Trans

TCU for the 88 is under the bottom curved part of the dash. Kind of under the glove box. Check your PM If you manually switch it to lock up, it will stall the motor when you stop. I'd try hooking up a simple light first and take it for a drive. Positive wire to the lock up solenoid wire...

    Cherokee Auto Trans

The torque converter lock up and unlock is pretty mild, actually hard to notice. I'd strip back a little insulation off of the white wire with a stripe coming out of the TCU (behind the knee kick panel under the dash, passengers side). and hookup a simple trouble light, it's 12 volts and will...
