I usually don't care for junk parts but a new steering box is $600 for just the housing no gears included. I did find "refurbished" for $175 or so but I would rather trust a part made in the factory with 70k miles on it than trust some foreigner working in a sweat shop rebuilding it.
If the gearbox is really worn tightening then backing off 1/4 wont be enough. It will bind when turning tight. If this happens just replace it. I did mine. 6 hours garage work and $75 junk yard gearbox.
Sounds like you need to adjust the bolt on the top of the steering box. Tighten it 1 full turn then 1/4 turns driving it around the block after each adjustment. Do this until the steering wheel seems labored when straightening after a corner stop and back it off 1/4. If this still doesn't help...
Its old. I have the same issue on my 98. Go to a body shop and have them look at it. I had all 4 doors and liftgate done for $30. It happens cuz the rods get old and are not the same shape as when manufactured so they will bind with age.
Buy a grand Cherokee. I hauled ALL of my carpetey tools in mine for 7 years. Also I have done some moderate wheeling with a "box" tool trailer. There is nothing a land Rover has on a Jeep. NOTHING!
Ok I looked it up in my repair manual for my zj and apparently the receiver is in the overhead compartment by the dome lights. Check those wires maybe. The book is kind of vague.
