For more of a direct bolt on , look for a 8.25 from a 97-01 XJ. They came with 29 splines on the shafts. And yes on the SYE For the rear DS, you can use a DS from the front of a XJ, they have the cv ends. And a drive shaft shop can make it the lenght you need.

It could also be the rear pinion bearing or a broken tooth n the gears.

After some research, it seems in the past there were some Harley Davidson dealers who took a jeep and customized them and used them as promo tool. If you google 1988 Jeep Wrangler Harley Davidson edition you'll see it. This might, might not be one of them.Just saying what I found.

Bgann92, You said "there are ball bearings in the gears". It could be that the bearing for the pinion took a crap.
