Had the same problem on my '88, 6months ago. Traced it to the cigarette lighter. Every time the lighter was held in (as it wouldn't stay in on its on accord) the fuse blew which also took out the radio. Haven't bothered to fix the lighter, so I just don't use it...

Must say guys, I'm getting quite fed-up with the news reporting in the UK. Being Australian, I was brought up with a choice of news from around the world. When this war in Afghan and Iraq broke out, the news (BBC especially) would report it as British and American led forces. If coalition forces...

:cry: This is really doing my head in. After checking out the engine, the garage has been told by Jeep that it is the gearbox!!! Apparently, a vacum pump in the gearbox has given out and is sending a vibration through the engine??? I don't know waht to believe. Anyone heard of this before...

And BTW, :oops:the mileage is actually 130,000 miles, (slight typo in my earlier post)

:-) Just thought I'd give an update on my "little" drama. After having it up on the hoist we could hear a very large tapping sound coming from the sump. Likely suspect is a gudgeon pin (or in American, a piston pin). Now I'm waiting for the verdict, she is back in today to have the sump dropped...

Thanks guys for your suggestions. She is 120,000 miles, golden oil in colour and doesn't smoke - in fact a very smooth ride, just this noise is abit of a worry (until I know how lethal it maybe to my wallet) as I'll be driving her from London to Poland and back again mid July
